Key facts about Pfizer and BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine
• Pfizer and BioNTech announced that its Covid-19 vaccine being developed has prevented more than 90% of infections in a study of ten of thousands of volunteers. This indicate that its effectiveness is more than 90%.
• This vaccine is based on messenger RNA technology, which has never before used in an approved medicine. Using mRNA, which essentially teaches the body’s cells to become vaccine factories, allowed it to be developed much faster than a traditional vaccine.
• So far, the findings are based on 94 participants that has contracted Covid-19. The trial will continue until 164 cases have occurred.

Are we too optimistic too early?
• Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine is a two-shot vaccine. It expects only 50m doses available by end-20F (25m people) and 1.3bn (650m) by end-2021F. This is only 8.3% of global population of 7.8bn.
• At this juncture, the data has yet to prove how long can the protection from this Covid-19 vaccine last. While the trial started in July, and since most participants only received their second dose much more recently, nobody knows how long any protection will last.
• According to Wiliam Gruber, Pfizer senior vice president for vaccine clinical research and development, “The data do have limits. For now, few details on the vaccine’s efficacy are available. It isn’t known how well the shot works in key subgroups, such as the elderly. Those analyses haven’t been conducted. And it isn’t known whether the vaccine prevents severe disease, as none of the participants who got Covid-19 in this round of analysis had severe cases”.
• Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a Pfizer director highlighted that he only expects wide availability of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine towards end-2Q21 or 3Q20 at the earliest.

We believe that this vaccine news will likely lead to negative sentiment on the glove sector, leading to short-term pressure on share prices.

However, we still are of the view that the fundamentals of the glove sector remains intact. In our view, global glove demand is unlikely to be negatively affected for at least the next 12 months while glove makers are already highlighting that they are receiving orders up to 1Q22. Based on data from the last H1N1 occurrence, surge in global glove demand was sustained for more than 10 months (Covid-19 demand is now up to 7 months so far). We believe that the limited availability of vaccine in 2021 will continue to drive higher glove usage, while we think the Covid-19 has change long-term usage patterns of gloves (higher healthcare awareness will lead to at least double the annual global glove demand growth of 8-10% for at least the next 3 years).
