NEW YORK: The more infectious Omicron variant of Covid-19 appears to produce less severe disease than the globally dominant Delta strain, but should not be categorised as "mild", the head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday.

Speaking at a media briefing, director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also repeated his call for greater equity globally in the distribution of and access to vaccines.

Based on the current rate of vaccine rollout, 109 countries will miss WHO's target for 70 per cent of the world's population to be fully vaccinated by July, Tedros added.

Another variant – labelled IHU and first registered in September 2021 – is among those being monitored by the WHO but is not circulating widely, said the WHO's technical lead on Covid-19, Maria van Kerkhove.

The number of people in hospital with coronavirus is at its highest since February last year, figures show, amid increasing pressure on health services.

A total of 17,276 people were in hospital in the UK with Covid-19 as of January 4, government figures show, up 58 per cent on the previous week and the highest number since February 19.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the country is seeing its fastest growth in cases, as more than 20 National Health Service trusts declared a critical incident.

NSW could suspend elective surgery and draft in private hospitals to help relieve pressure on the hospital system, after the state recorded another 34,994 COVID-19 cases.

The new cases were identified from 111,231 tests in the 24 hours to 8pm on Wednesday. About 31 per cent of the tests were positive.

The number of people in hospital (1609) and intensive care units (131), as well as those on ventilators (38) also rose.

Premier Dominic Perrottet warned the state may suspend elective surgeries to relieve pressure on the hospital system.

Private hospitals could also be asked to help "in managing ... these increases in cases", he said.

Australian Medical Association NSW president Danielle McMullen said the indication elective surgery could be cancelled was "yet another sign of a system in crisis" and suspending surgeries was an "avoidable" move that "will have profound consequences for patients".

COVID-19 cases in the United States are up 98 percent compared to last week, officials said, amid rising concern over the rapid spread of the Omicron variant in the country.

During a regular COVID news briefing Rochelle Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the US is currently averaging 491,700 cases per day.

Hospitalisations, currently averaging 14,800 per day, were 63 percent higher than last week. Deaths, at 1,200 per day, were at a 5 percent increase from a week ago.

“Over the last several weeks and over the holidays we have seen a significant and rapid increase in COVID-19 cases,” Walensky said.

The CDC also said that the highly infectious Omicron variant now accounts for 95 percent of coronavirus cases in the US, while only 5 percent are due to the Delta strain.

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 5): Share prices of rubber glove makers Hartalega Holdings Bhd, Top Glove Corp Bhd, Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd and Supermax Corp Bhd rose in Wednesday (Jan 5) Bursa Malaysia morning trade in an apparent reaction to news on the emergence of IHU — a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the Covid-19 pandemic.

The emergence of IHU appeared to have raised fresh pandemic concerns after the variant emerged in France recently, news.com.au reported on Wednesday (Jan 5).

It was reported that IHU was first detected in France last month, but is now making international headlines after catching the attention of global experts.

"The medical world is on alert yet again after a new mutant Covid-19 variant emerged in France recently. At least 12 cases were confirmed near the Marseilles area, and it is understood that many of those patients were hospitalised with the illness.

"Variant IHU, which is believed to be linked with travel to the African nation of Cameroon, has 46 mutations which experts fear could mean it is more resistant to existing vaccines.

Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd analyst Ng Jun Sheng wrote in note on Wednesday (Jan 5) that the research house sees increased volatility in the Malaysian stock market on factors including "the emergence of new Covid-19 variant IHU (studies [of which] showed more mutations than Omicron), fluid domestic politics and the impact on sectors/corporates after widespread flooding in many states in Peninsular Malaysia”.

New York COVID hospitalizations surpassed the 10,000-mark and then some Tuesday, totaling their highest levels since early May 2020 as new estimates released by the CDC estimate omicron's regional prevalence to be as high as 99%.

There's nothing misleading about the skyrocketing statewide hospitalization numbers, however. Statewide hospitalizations stood at 10,411 as of Tuesday, the highest total since since April 30, 2020, when the total was 10,993. The level of increase over the last two days alone (1,638), for comparative purposes, is just 238 admissions shy of the total hospitalized statewide exactly three months ago.

And the count is expected to climb further, with this latest viral wave, as one Manhattan emergency room doctor put it this week, "making people really sick in a different way" than prior waves did.

More than half of all COVID patients hospitalized statewide are in New York City, which has the second-highest adult full vaccination rate (84.1%) of the state's 10 regions behind only Long Island (86.5%). Yet both regions, once again impaired by their density compared with others, find themselves atop COVID impact charts.

On Tuesday, 112,941 Americans were hospitalized with Covid-19, according to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The new figure far exceeds peak hospitalizations during the Delta variant surge -- nearly 104,000 in early September. It's also creeping toward the pandemic-high number of Covid-19 patients hospitalized in a single day -- 142,246, on January 14 of last year.

"Unfortunately, this is the consequence of a highly transmissible variant, the Omicron variant," US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told CNN on Tuesday.

Now, more hospital intensive care units are nearing capacity.

Hospitals in NSW are much closer to capacity due to surging Covid cases than is being admitted by officials, warn doctors and nurses, with one saying the system has “never been this bad”.

One senior specialist said “even the most routine urgent treatment” was already being cancelled to divert resources to Covid. “People will die,” he said.

Privately, though, doctors and nurses who are not authorised to speak publicly say the health system is close to capacity.

“No way will the health system cope,” said the senior specialist. “It’s never been this bad.”

The senior doctor said the focus on staff shortages overlooked the issue that all the state’s major hospitals were rapidly approaching bed capacity. At the current rate “every single bed will only be for Covid patients … it doesn’t matter how many staff they call back”.

“People are turning up really unwell,” she said. “They are staying 40, 50, 60 hours” in emergency wards while they wait for capacity to be made available.

BROOKLYN — New York hospitals are once again under pressure as this latest COVID surge continues, with more than 67,000 people diagnosed Tuesday.

There as been an increase of about 600 patients hospitalized with COVID each of the last three days. A number of large New York City hospitals are now limited in what they can do with low bed capacity.

COVID patients are showing up in droves to hospitals, creating a lot of strain at hospitals, including Kings Country, Brookdale, Harlem Hospital, and Elmhurst. All have less than 10% bed capacity remaining.

“We do have a significant number of people showing up to the hospital with COVID and a lot of them do get admitted,” said Dr. Adrian Popp, chair of Infectious Disease at Huntington Hospital.

“The staffing is also an issue because a lot of them have come down with the illness.”

At current pace, by next week New York could see as many hospitalizations, around 9,000, as last winter at the height of the delta surge.
