Americans Snap Up Imports From Vietnam at China’s Expense

by Michelle Jamrisko, bloomberg.com
May 27, 2019 08:33 PM

U.S. orders from Vietnam surged 40% in first quarter
Nation will overtake U.K., Italy, France at that pace
Vietnam was one of the fastest-growing sources of American imports from Asia last quarter, and could potentially overtake the U.K. as a bigger supplier to the U.S. if it keeps up that pace.

Imports from the Southeast Asian economy jumped 40.2% in the first three months of 2019 from a year earlier, while orders from South Korea rose 18.4%, latest U.S. Census Bureau data show. At the same time, American imports of Chinese goods plunged 13.9% as trade tensions heated up.

If Vietnam’s pace of growth can be sustained for a full year -- which would be a major feat -- it could leapfrog Italy, France, the U.K., and India in the ranks of top exporters to the U.S.

Jaks Resources Bhd
(May 15, 75.5 sen)
Maintain neutral with an unchanged target price (TP) of 75 sen: JAKS Resources Bhd announced that it had entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Licogi 13, a joint stock company incorporated in Vietnam to acquire the Lig-Quang Tri (LQT) Solar Power Project as well as future joint-venture arrangements or sale and purchase transactions in respect of other solar and wind energy projects in Vietnam. This is consistent with the group’s plans to venture into the renewable energy business. The Lig-Quang Tri Solar Power Plant (LIG-QTSPP), sitting on nearly 60ha of land in Gio Hai and Gio Thanh communes in the Gio Linh district, has a designed capacity of 49.5MWh, generating 67.96MWh of electricity each year. We understand that the LQT Solar Power Project was built at a cost of US$47.26 million (or about RM197 million). Pending more details, our earnings estimates are kept unchanged for now. All told, we are still wary of the various dilutive effects of equity fundraising done so far and poor execution, especially of its property business. We maintain “neutral” with our TP of 75 sen unchanged for now pending completion of the latest private placement exercise.

We understand that the power purchase agreement for the LIG-QTSPP was executed on Oct 23, 2018 and this project has a life span of 50 years. Currently, the plant is completed and awaiting connection to the national grid. The MoU is non-exclusive to each party and it does not have any legal binding effect or binding commitment in respect of the proposed acquisition. Assuming a purchase price of US$50 million, we estimate that Jaks would need at least RM62.55 million cash (assuming 30% equity and 70% debt) to fund the solar power plant. As such, we suspect Jaks might need to yet again tap the equity market to fund the acquisition. — PublicInvest Research, May 15

JAKS RESOURCES: (MYR0.76) To buy power plant in Vietnam; strengthening its footing

Maybank IB Retail Research

Jaks Resources entered into a memorandum of understanding with LICOGI 13 for the proposed acquisition of the Lig-Quang Tri (LQT) solar power project in Vietnam as well as to explore the possibility of setting up joint venture on future solar and wind energy projects in Vietnam.

The power plant, which is located at Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province, Vietnam, has a total capacity of 49.5 MW and average generation of 67.960 MW per year. The LQT power plant is expected to come into operation by end of Jun 2019. The PPA for the LQT solar power plant, which was executed on 23 October 2018, has a life time of 50 years.

While this tie up seems positive, as it is in line with the group’s plan to expand its renewable energy projects in Southeast Asia, this announcement lacks financial details (acquisition price, earnings from LQT, as well as funding requirements). And it is too early to gauge its financial impact.

Nonetheless, should this acquisition materialises, it could increase the contribution from Vietnam. Currently, Jaks is in the midst of constructing Hai Duong BOT Thermal Power Plant in Vietnam and upon the completion of the power plant in 1H20, Jaks will receive recurring income for the Hai Duong BOT Thermal Power Plant for a period of 25 years. At present, the construction of 2 x 600 MW coal fired thermal power plant is 56% completed.

But in the near-term, Jaks’ earnings hinge on its strong construction pipeline. It has an outstanding order book of MYR1.8b, which is equivalent to 2.4x its FY18 revenue. The pipeline includes MYR1.2b Vietnam EPC contract and MYR593m local contracts (including waste water and water-related facilities projects, roadworks and building construction).

Note that the group also has a property division, but management indicated that it has the intention to step back from property development business due to the challenging property market once the Pacific Star project completes this year.

Against the healthy outlook (strong construction pipeline and potential contribution from the Vietnam concession), the street is forecasting a 88.3% 3-year EPS CAGR for FY18-21.Brokers are positively biased on the stock with one Buy and one Hold. The mean target price is MYR0.88.

Valuation also looks compelling at this juncture. At current price, the stock is trading at 3.8x consensus FY19 EPS of 20.0sen.
