Jaks Resources’ 1Q19 PATMI rose 60% YoY to MYR28.6m, accounting for 32% of consensus full-year estimate. The better results were attributable to stronger contribution from its Vietnam operation. No dividend was declared for the current quarter.

In 1Q19, construction PBT rose 115% YoY on the back of a 49% YoY increase in revenue, driven by higher progress billings and profit recognised from the Vietnam EPC operation as well as a 6.6ppts expansion in PBT margin to 21.3% on cost saving (1Q18: 14.7%). These more than offset: 1) the loss-making property development division; and 2) a higher effective tax rate of 6.7% (1Q18: 4.0%).

Looking at the strong construction pipeline, this division will likely be the key earnings driver of the group over the next 2-3 years. It has an outstanding order book of MYR1.8b, which is equivalent to 2.4x its FY18 revenue. The pipeline includes MYR1.2b Vietnam EPC contract and MYR593m local contracts (including waste water and water-related facilities projects, roadworks and building construction).

But longer-term, revenue mix for Jaks could change. Upon the completion of the construction of the power plant in Vietnam in 1H20, Jaks will receive recurring income for the Hai Duong BOT Thermal Power Plant in Vietnam for a period of 25 years. At present, the construction of 2 x 600 MW coal fired thermal power plant is 46% completed.

For property, management indicated that it has the intention to step back from property development business due to the challenging property market once the Pacific Star project completes this year.

The street is forecasting a 6.9% 2-year EPS CAGR for FY19-21, likely premised on the construction pipeline and potential contribution from the Vietnam concession. Brokers are positively biased on the stock with one Buy and one Hold. The mean target price is MYR0.88.

Valuation also looks compelling at this juncture. At current price, the stock is trading at 5.0x consensus FY19 EPS of 15.3sen.
