The tariff exemptions on the medical goods and personal protective equipment used to fight Covid-19 are set to expire on September 30
The administration of US President Joe Biden will soon decide whether to extend tariff exemptions for Chinese-made masks, gloves and other goods needed to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a notice set to be published on Friday by the US Trade Representative’s office.
“In light of these changing circumstances, including the ability of the United States to obtain certain products domestically or from other sources, USTR is requesting public comments on whether to extend particular exclusions for COVID-19 products for up to six months,” it says.
The announcement comes as Washington and Beijing continue to clash on a range of fronts, including trade policy. “USTR will evaluate each exclusion on a case-by-case basis,” the notice says.The notice says that the administration will not only look at whether the products from China are needed during the pandemic -- but also whether the tariff exclusions are helping the US achieve its broader goals related to China’s trade practices.
Biden’s top trade adviser, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, has been vocal about what she describes as China’s “coercive and unfair trade practices”.

This tariff against China medical products is a very important issue . If US were to reimpose the tariff it will potentially clip the wings of the China glovemakers' ability to expand further and allow the ASP to stabilize at higher levels above USD 35. This would have quite a major positive longer term implication to our glovemakers.
The question is what is the likely decision come 30 Sept dateline. Reading the above article, one will notice 3 key points:
1) the administration will not only look at whether the products from China are needed during the pandemic -- but also whether the tariff exclusions are helping the US achieve its broader goals related to China’s trade practices.
2) USTR is requesting public comments on whether to extend particular exclusions for COVID-19 products for up to six months
3) Biden’s top trade adviser, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, has been vocal about what she describes as China’s “coercive and unfair trade practices”.

The above 3 key points seem to imply a negative outlook towards the extension of the tariff exemption. Item 1 is self explanatory. Item 2, the current public opinion on China is more negative than positive. Item 3 , Katherine Tai ( don't think she is related to Stanley, but sharing a unique surname may help in some ways) being Biden top trade advisor is rather negative about China. Its understandable as her parents are Taiwanese. [Tai was born in Connecticut and grew up in Washington, D.C., where she attended Sidwell Friends School.[5] Her parents, who were both born in mainland China,[6] grew up in Taiwan and later immigrated to the United States]
Another sign is that US has just lifted the ban on TG to allow more non-China gloves to enter US. I believe all the points above will likely lead to the re-imposition of the tariff.

Likely Delta will be accompanied by at least 2 other new variants with that can fully evade the vaccines. US is up lifting the TG ban as they can see the challenges ahead and they don't want to rely largely on China as the main supplier. They will plan to slowly ween off from relying on China supplier.

Today's RSS attack on TG is huge. It shows desperation to press further down to cover back cheap later before the tariff is re-imposed. Looks like TG retailers would need to be more resilient amid the huge pressure. Makes no sense a good news can be made to look like a bad news for gloves.

hey shareinvestor888, if you don't agree with pjseow calculation bcos u think its wrong, then pls show ur proof of why he is wrong, Just bcos u don't like his calculation doesn't mean he is wrong. Many of us, including me look forward to his calculations to form an idea. We decide for ourselves if he got it right or wrong. We may not accept every basis of the calculation but it gives us a basis to compare our own assumptions. So can u pls think more maturely and do ur own assessment of other ppl opinion and rationalistion. If you have the tendency to accept everything you read at face value, pls assign a guardian to monitor u while u surf the investment forums, so u can get proper guidance before u make any investment decision. Also, even if a calculation or opinion is from a "qualified" analyst, I will still not accept it at face value.

Its clear that the current glove prices alrdy discounted the ASP drop, lower utilization rate due to SOP and strong China competition. There's nothing new as these issues have been played up for last 2 quarters. That's why glove prices alrdy at rock bottom now. However, soon utilization will improve due to vaccination of the workers. ASP expected to stablise above USD 35. On China competition, US/Uk/Europe will only buy from them if Msia cannot supply enough. However, when worker situation normalize, we should be able to recover some of the lost sales. The current tension between US/UK-China will be a disadvantage to China glovemakers in the long term.

Yup Chief, at this rock bottom price and with their quota depleted to only 370k lots, if we all hold tight tight, there is not much they can do. And if Stealth can get enough members to form a strong barricade between 3.0-3.1 level, then we have a good fight in hand. That will force them to use more of their bullets if they want to press even lower. Those who bought will then continue to hold further and only sell > 4.0

@Stealth Tonee, so we should all hold and not sell to them at all. The Shorts dont have enough in their arsenal, only 37k lots left. How much of that would they risk to short further if we dont throw back to them. I already have 3 to 4 guys willing to park rm2m each to form a barricade. But we need more support!

Actually Stealth, if you observe the trading pattern, I think there are alrdy some funds doing that, that ie targeting the shorties shares. We as bilis only need to hold tight tight to help them to fight the battle. You are right , its only ard RM 100mil to hit their quota, but that's provided they want to use up their bullets. That's why they are trying to capture as many retailers cheap bullets, so lets not supply them with the cheap bullets.

Ya Stealth , his time will come for sure. On ur call to form a barricade is not easy. The shorties still have 37-38mil unit shares in their arsenal. Its akin to having tanks and bazookas vs our rifles and hand guns. We may need Stanley to use his Super Ballistics Bazooka (SBB) to squash them up and then to squeeze them at same time. Even then, the key to the whole thing is, we all retailers must hold really tight to our bullets and not hand over to the shorties cheaply to use against us. The moment they can cover more short positions cheaply, they will build enough buffer to push further down. But otherwise they will need to use more of their bullets to press down which will bring them closer to their quota, and therefore squeezing themselves further. So don't cut loss but persevere thru and keep for the coming dividends. The irony is that the longer we hold, the more confidence will comeback to this counter, as the shorties will have limited options to create further damage. I will be nibbling at the shorties bullets.
