IEA Says Governments Should Consider Stockpiling Battery Metals

.........................
Stockpiling programs could provide a valuable buffer as leading industrial nations look to develop reliable supplies of metals and minerals that will play a critical role in a decarbonizing world, the energy watchdog said in a report on Wednesday.

.........................
“Meeting our climate change goals will turbocharge demand for mineral resources,” Fatih Birol, the head of the IEA, said by phone. “Voluntary strategic stockpiling can in some cases help countries weather short-term supply disruptions.”

.....................
The agency has since broadened its remit, advising governments on energy policy and increasingly on climate change. Now the influential watchdog is urging governments to brace against new supply risks as the world becomes increasingly reliant on an array of critical minerals that are often only produced at scale in a handful of countries.

Tin Market Outlook

Tin prices have soared since the start of 2021 reaching 10-year high’s not seen since the 2011 boom. The LME spot tin price has averaged ~US$28,000/t for the 2 months to 14 April 2021.

(05 May 2021 : USD 32,000 / t)

This is due to strong physical global tin demand growth which has exceed falling global tin supply and is creating an extremely tight market for tin with LME tin stocks reaching near record lows.

Tin Demand
Physical tin demand is growing strongly as a result of:

Covid and the rise of remote working has boosted demand for computers and other home electronics devices. As tin solder is the ‘glue’ connecting everything electronic, this means increased demand for tin.

Continued demand for tin in traditional uses including tinplate, chemicals, lead-acid batteries, alloys and other uses.

Tin Supply

Global tin supply has fallen for each of the last 3 years. Falling global tin supply has been the result of:

* China is the world’s largest miner of tin and smelter of tin metal and has also been a net tin importer this year. Production cuts have occurred in many Chinese tin smelters this year due to tin ore shortages. China is stockpiling tin to meet its goal of self-sufficiency in semiconductors.

* Indonesia (world’s 2nd largest producer) – production has fallen this year due to a poor monsoon season along with ongoing environmental controls and covid issues.

* Myanmar (world’s 3rd largest producer) – production has fallen this year due to the military coup and largely unreliable artisanal and small-scale mining.

* South America (world’s 4th largest producer) supply has been reduced this year due to Covid issues.

Many existing tin mines now have lower grade and diminishing resources. There has been limited exploration or investment in new tin projects and many are either in risky jurisdictions or are low grade deposits.

Tin – The Number 1 New Technology Metal

Tin ranked as the No. 1 metal best placed to benefit from new technology according to a survey undertaken by Boston’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for Rio Tinto in 2018.

~50% of all tin is used as solder in electronics. Solder is the ‘glue’ that connects everything electronic together.

Our clean, new technology future is being driven by robotics, advanced computing, EV’s, energy storage and renewables – these all require more electronics and semiconductors which all need more tin.

Growing research is also showing that tin may be a more effective anode material in Li-ion batteries.

Tin has a wide variety of uses including; solder, tin chemicals, tinplate, lead-acid batteries, copper alloys and other uses. It also has increasing usage as an energy metal for Electric Vehicles.

47% of tin is consumed as lead-free solder by the consumer electronics industry.

Tin chemicals, the second largest end-use with 16% of the market, has the fastest growth.

Post Lithium Ion Batteries
Whilst the current focus is on lithium ion batteries the next generation of cheaper, safer products is already in development, including sodium ion, magnesium ion, potassium ion and other products. Tin, its alloys and compounds are prominent candidates for anode materials in some of these, and a growing number of developments including tin are noted. Although performance of some prototypes already exceeds commercial lithium ion products, it is likely that such products will find their own market space and indeed some are already being used in niche markets.

Solar PV
Tin was early in the race for new ‘earth abundant’ materials to replace expensive and rare elements used in current solar PV technologies such as gallium. The first generation product was a ‘kesterite’ copper tin zinc sulphide (CZTS) developed by IBM. More recently tin has gained attention in ‘lead-free’ perovskite products that have dramatically competitive performance, targeted at new markets for example on architectural glass. Tin is also being explored as a heat energy storage medium on solar farms that concentrate sunlight using mirrors. Apart from the materials themselves, this sector is already benefitting tin use in China particularly through increased use of solder ribbon used to join solar cells, and increased associated electronics production.

China removes VAT rebate on steel exports, cuts tax on raw material imports to zero

Singapore — China has announced the removal of VAT rebates on exports of 146 steel products from May 1, a move the market had been widely anticipating since February.

The rebate of 13% of the VAT charged on exports of hot rolled coil, wire rod and rebar will no longer apply from May, according to a statement on the finance ministry's website.

The move to discourage steel exports and loosen imports of steelmaking raw materials comes at a time when China's crude steel output in April reached the second-highest level in history, despite production cuts mandated in the steel hubs of Tangshan and Handan in Hebei province, and as prices of seaborne iron ore reached a record high.

Aluminum Commands Record Premium in U.S. Amid Economic Recovery
By Joe Deaux
April 22, 2021, 10:23 PM GMT+7

The premium buyers pay to have aluminum shipped to the U.S. Midwest touched a record high, surpassing the level reached six years ago when banks and trading houses famously joined in “merry-go-round deals” at warehouses to collect higher rents.

.............................................................

The benchmark price of aluminum traded in London is up almost 20% this year in its best start since 2008, propelled by a global economic recovery that’s expected to fuel purchases of everything from autos to toasters. The metal is also rising on bets that China, the biggest producer, will curb supply to cut emissions, with Alcoa Corp. Chief Executive Officer Roy Harvey calling the nation’s steps to rein in output a “game-changer” for the industry.

The pandemic recovery in the U.S. is causing “booming demand” and “skyrocketing freight rates,” with the continuing tariffs on imported aluminum “now fully reflected as part of the perfect storm,” Jorge Vazquez, the managing director at Harbor, said in a phone interview.

Last month’s Suez Canal blockage briefly added more concerns for an unusually tight aluminum market that was already facing a week-long delay on average due to demand for all products -- regardless of whether it was metal or other goods. The sudden rise comes months after premiums were as low as 9.35 cents per pound in August, according to Harbor.

Global Steel Boom Builds as Rampant Demand Overwhelms Supply

Bloomberg News
April 27, 2021, 2:12 PM GMT+7

Steel prices are spiking from Asia to North America, and iron ore’s relentless march toward a record is accelerating, as bets on a global economic recovery fuel frenzied demand.

The world outside China is finally catching up with the Asian steel giant’s already strong markets as a global rebound drives a powerful wave of buying that can’t be matched by production. Sectors such manufacturing and construction are ramping up and governments have pledged to splurge on infrastructure as they map their post-pandemic path back to growth.

...................................

Pricing Power

Prices for hot-rolled coil, a benchmark steel product, are up threefold in North America from pandemic lows and they’re also soaring in Europe. In China, which has already enjoyed a year of robust demand, steel is the most expensive since 2008.

...................................
Making Money

Meanwhile, higher steel prices and China’s effort to clean up its mammoth and heavy-polluting industry with targeted production curbs has pushed profitability at mills to the highest in more than a decade, according to a Bloomberg Intelligence gauge.

Bloomberg News

Publishing date:Apr 25, 2021

Copper — a bellwether for the global economy — rose as much as 2.4% to $9,780 a metric ton in London, the highest since August 2011, and settled at $9,751 at 5:51 p.m. local time. The metal has gained 26% on the London Metal Exchange this year.

Iron ore in Singapore jumped to the highest since contracts launched in 2013, while Chinese steel futures reached fresh highs.

...............................

Steel’s stormed higher on a pledge by China to reduce output, though the measures have so far sparked an increase in production as mills churn out supply ahead of possibly more extensive restrictions. At the same time, rebar inventories are declining, signaling robust demand.

..................

The threat of Covid-19 in nations in South America could hamper the export of key industrial commodities like iron ore and copper, said Gavin Wendt, senior resource analyst at MineLife Pty.

Global recovery powers metal boom as copper and steel prices soar

LONDON: Investors looking to gauge the strength of the global recovery need look no further than metals markets.

.............................................................

The US recovery is accelerating and President Joe Biden’s US$2.25 trillion (RM9.22 trillion) infrastructure plan will highlight sectors like electric cars, driving further gains in commodities critical to the green-energy transition.

That’s coming alongside a continued economic boom in China, where a push to reduce emissions is already filtering through to supply cuts for some metals just as demand is picking up.

“Global demand is recovering, led by China, while the green transition is bolstering sentiment further, ” Zhu Yi, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence, said by phone.

“In short, demand will stay resilient, while supply won’t expand, upside momentum will go forward.”

After year of slow sales, First Solar looks to rebound in 2021 with focus on innovation, manufacturing

Dive Brief:
First Solar's net sales fell from $3.1 billion in 2019 to $2.7 billion due to delays caused by the pandemic, CEO Mark Widmar explained during a company earnings call on Thursday.

Despite higher shipping rates, First Solar cut costs by 10% per watt in 2020, and aims to shave off another 11% in 2021, targeting the development of 500-watt modules.

As the company closes out the sale of its development business, Widmar said First Solar will focus on innovation, cutting costs and improving efficiencies. "As we look into the future with a more focused business model, our pace of innovation will be critical to our competitive strengths," he said.

Despite some increased shipping costs, First Solar CFO Alex Bradley said the company grew its gross margins from 18% in 2019 to 25% in 2020, cutting the cost of their modules by 10% per watt year-over-year.

Improved performance has also prompted First Solar to extend its 25-year power output warranty to 30 years, Widmar said, and he indicated that customers and investors can expect more of the same in 2021, as the company completes the sale of its solar development operations and turns its focus to manufacturing and innovation.

Widmar indicated that First Solar has a multi-junction device in early development that he believes could prove to be a disruptive new technology

Beside this, Widmar said, First Solar aims to reduce costs another 11% in 2021 by reducing materials costs by 20-25% and shipping by 15%. Long-term, he said, achieving the company's goal of developing 500-watt solar modules is a critical piece of the company's cost-cutting strategy

Widmar said the company also aims to expand it's manufacturing capacity, while maintaining the company's emphasis on liquidity. First Solar ended 2020 with $1.5 billion in net cash in the bank.

Maintaining a large bank account balance, he said, has proven to be a key competitive advantage for the company by enabling it to weather market turbulence and to self-fund new projects.

This company is Direct beneficiary from Biden $2 trillion infrastructure package !

Potential MYR Bils Contract Renewal !

.............. From the above, we understand that Second Series 6 Factory in Malaysia already exit ramp in Q1.
This helps FIRST SOLAR to expand the manufacturing capacity to next level +38% from year 2020.

The contract ending Q1 2021 (3 Years from Q1 2018).

Will PA Resources get the renewal ? If yes, we expect the contract should be more than RM1bil.

enlightenedAs First Solar forecasted 8.7GW capacity in 2021

2018 - 5.6 GW
2019 - 6.1 GW
2020 - 6.3 GW

Total 3 Years : 18 GW

2021E : 8.7GW
2022E : 9.4GW

Total 2 Years E : 18.1 GW (+50% At least)

Biden's massive $2 trillion infrastructure package is a provision that would require every state to generate all of its electricity by 2035 from fuels that do not produce any of the carbon emissions linked to global climate change.

Such a transition would trigger a massive spending boom in wind and solar power -- at least doubling the pace of investment now.

Because alluminium price as per today keep on increasing upward.

As we can see, many new car increase using Aluminium. Luxury vehicles such as Ford, Audi, and Mercedes Benz have increased the adoption of aluminum as a versatile material of choice in body structures including engine, transmission, and wheels.

If we look at PMETAL, then it's no reason to ignore PA.

They both have similar.

First Solar is a very big solar company in USA, its PA client. From our sources we believe that they will renew this contract soon, and with even bigger amount, because BIDEN win the USA election.

1. PA is on a strong recovery trend in technical and fundamental.

2. Alluminium price and demand is increasing.

3. PA doing share consolidate, which we can see VIVOCOM and many other case after split price will goreng up big.

4. First solar is their client, which is going to benefit them even more in future.

5. The price is just waking up, it will continue go up until share consolidate done, and go even higher.
