1Q16 a blowout quarter

The average jet fuel price YTD of USD45/bbl is much lower than our base assumption of USD60/bbl for 2016. According to International Air Travel Association (IATA), passenger demand outstripped supply for Jan and Feb 2016, thus boosting load factors to record levels. Furthermore, the USD has weakened more than expected on the US Federal Reserve Banks’s decision to keep interest rates steady, and this has caused strengthening of most Asian currencies. Our 2016 profit forecast for the industry seems modest at this juncture and there is scope for an upgrade.
Asian airline stocks up by an average of 9.7% YTD

The average share price movement YTD is +9.7%. Thirteen stocks have recorded positive gains whereas 16 others are in losses. Stocks that have fallen the most in 2015 are outperforming in 2016 whilst stocks that have surged the most in 2015 are underperforming in 2016. Investors have picked up the most severely beaten up airline shares on the premise of cheap valuations.
Positive on India, Philippine and Australasia. Negative on Thailand and South Korea.

We like India, Philippines and Australasia for their favourable industry landscape and a relatively well-behaved competitive environment. We favour IndiGo (INDIGO IN, BUY) and Cebu Air (CEB PM, BUY) as the highquality names, followed by Air New Zealand (AIR NZ, Not Rated). We are cautious on Thai-based airlines due to the on-going fare war and find better investment opportunities in Airports of Thailand (AOT TB, BUY) and Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services (BAFS TB, Not Rated) which actually benefits from this fare war.
