美国油业正面临末日场景。新冠肺炎疫情导致原油需求骤降，全球各地能储存过剩石油的空间亦随之减少。同时，俄罗斯和沙地阿拉伯仍持续过量供油。
美国有线电视新闻网（CNN）报导，两起“黑天鹅事件”（指非常难预测，且不寻常的事件），导致油价崩跌到美国页岩油公司无法获利的程度。
据报，美国5月原油期货20日降至负值，这是自1983年开始在纽约商品交易所（NYMEX）交易以来，未曾出现过的现象，是油市有史以来最糟的一天。
目前，美国6月交割原油期货合约，仍在每桶20美元（约88令吉）以上。
挪威谘询机构吕斯塔德能源公司、页岩研究部主管阿伯拉莫夫称：“30美元（约132令吉）已相当糟糕，一旦降到20美元甚至10美元，就是场恶梦。”
许多石油司于荣景期间，背负太多债务，造成有些将无法熬过此次景气低迷的时期。
据吕斯塔德估计，油价若维持在20美元，2021年底前将会有533家石油探勘和生产公司申请破产，降到10美元则会有逾1100家公司申请破产。
原油价格持续下跌，部分原因是减产要到5月才生效，需求却不断消失。因疫情影响，飞机、车辆纷纷停驶，工厂也停工。
石油业寄望，油价周一跌到负值仅因期货合约转仓出现的偶然现象。但原油合约每个月都要转仓，并没无次次跌到纪录低点。
重点在于石油贱价的情况会维持多久。若价格很快反弹，许多油公司就能避免破产。
