KUALA LUMPUR: Sumatec Resources Bhd, which includes the likes of businessman Tan Sri Halim Saad as a major shareholder with 24.9% stake, is looking at new oil field acquisitions to expand its overseas footprint this year.

Its CEO Christopher Layton Dalton said Sumatec is screening for potential acquisitions in Kazakhstan, Russia, UK, Europe, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

"We want to broaden our horizon. Besides our current presence in Kazakhstan, we are also looking at all the different options that meet our criteria, taking into consideration their political, economic and financial stability," he told reporters after the group's EGM here yesterday.

Dalton said Sumatec will start acquiring companies this year. "We want to get the concessions of oil and gas development & production," he added.

Sumatec is eyeing matured and proven assets that are undervalued, onshore or near shore. Dalton, however, ruled out assets in deepwater and on the continental shelf.

Dalton said the group will tap into the debt market to fund the merger and acquisition activities.

Sumatec has sold off and closed down all its downstream assets to turn into an upstream player following a series of restructuring exercises.

Earlier in the meeting, shareholders gave Sumatec the go-ahead to develop gas resources at the Rakushechnoye oil and gas field in the Karakiyan district of the Mangistau Oblast, Kazakhstan, through a partnership with Markmore Energy (Labuan) Ltd (MELL).

Halim Saad did not attend the meeting yesterday.

On another note, Dalton said Sumatec expects to achieve profit of RM69 million in the financial year ending Dec 31, 2014 (FY14), and exit the Practice Note 17 (PN17) category after second quarter this year.

"We will make the submission at August this year, should the group record a profit for two consecutive quarters. Hopefully, we will be uplifted from the PN17 list, the earliest in this September," he said.

The estimated profit for FY14 excludes the profit contribution from its agreement on the gas development in Kazakhstan, he added.

Dalton said Sumatec has allocated US$30 million as capital expenditure in 2014 to develop oil resources at the Rakushechnoye field. In the long run, the group plans to invest US$250 million in the next five years.

Sumatec's cash balance stood at RM5 million as at end of 2013.

Sumatec sees RM1b revenue by 2015

By Sharen Kaur
Published: 2013/06/22

ON TRACK TO PROFIT: Company banking on oil and gas field in Kazakhstan
Sumatec Resources Bhd should be debt-free by August and achieve its RM1 billion revenue target within three years, says its major shareholder Tan Sri Halim Saad.

The company is banking on its Rakushechnoye oil and gas field in Mangystau, Kazakhstan, to put it on a solid profit path.

It has a Joint Investment Agreement with Markmore Energy (Labuan) Ltd and CaspiOilGas LLP for the commercial development and production of the Rakushechnoye field.

Markmore Energy and CaspiOilGas, the company that holds the concession for the field up to 2025, are controlled by Halim.

PETALING JAYA: Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s (TM) bid to be a converged telecoms player with its acquisition of Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd (P1) could yield long-term strategic opportunities if executed well, said Nomura Research analysts.

Its Asean telco analysts said, however, there were also questions regarding TM’s market entry strategy, network rollout plans and capital expenditure risks, among others, with a key investor concern being whether it could take on mobile players.

“We don’t dismiss the challenges in this shift; however, if executed well, there could be long-term strategic opportunities as well,” they said in a report.

Estimating data garnered around 30% of total wireless revenues, while tablets, smartphones and long-term evolution, or LTE, technology grew more mainstream, they said TM could tap into this growing market with its ability to offer a converged product.

Nomura Research also noted that TM’s re-entry into the wireless segment was similar to that of the United Kingdom’s BT Group, which recently secured 4G spectrum and was looking to launch wireless services.

Its analysts pointed out that BT’s initial offering was, interestingly, for the small and medium enterprise (SME) market rather than consumer, opining that TM could adopt a similar approach as well.

“Within its retail segment, SMEs, Government and enterprise account for 60% of TM’s retail revenue, while consumer takes up the rest. TM has 80% share in these segments, we think,” they said.

Nomura Research added that TM’s conclusion of its high-speed broadband discussions with the Government would be a key catalyst in the near-term, and remained positive on its second phase of fibre rollout.

They said TM’s current initiatives should see average earnings growth of 9% per annum in financial year 2014 (FY14) to FY17, adding that it was currently trading at 27 times Nomura Research’s revised forecast FY14 earnings.

Believing the stock has further catalysts despite a 15% year-to-date outperformance already, they have lifted their target price to RM7, maintaining their “buy” call.

Sumatec CFO sells entire stake, shares and warrants extend rally

PETALING JAYA: Sumatec Resources Bhd’s chief financial officer Roshidah Abdullah sold her entire 20 million shares in the company on July 9, making a gross gain of about RM6.16mil.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said Roshidah had disposed of her entire 0.64% stake in Sumatec for 30.8 sen per share.

Yesterday, Sumatec’s shares and warrants jumped, extending their Friday rally, which came about after the company said it was proposing to buy Borneo Energy Oil and Gas Ltd for US$250mil (RM785.387mil).

Borneo Energy is a Kazakhstan oil and gas (O&G) outfit that has the rights for exploration and production in two fields in that country.

Sumatec shares hit an intra-day high of 42 sen yesterday, closing the day at 40.5 sen, an 8% increase, with 478 million shares being done. It was the highest close since Nov 14 last year.

Its warrants, Sumatec-WB and Sumatec-WA, meanwhile, jumped 14.75% and 17.54% to close at 35 sen and 33.5 sen, respectively. Sumatec’s shares and warrants were among the most active counters yesterday.

Sumatec also recently appointed Datuk Ahmad Johari Abdul Razak (the brother of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) as an independent non-executive director. Ahmad Johari has a 1.92% direct interest in Sumatec.

The Practice Note 17 firm is currently involved in the development and production of gas for the Rakuschechnoye O&G field in Kazakhstan with Markmore Energy (Labuan) Ltd.

Markmore is the owner of the concession and holds the sub-surface user rights for the Rakuschechnoye field through its unit CaspiOilGas LLP. Businessman Tan Sri Halim Saad owns 99% of Markmore and is also Sumatec’s major shareholder.

It has been reported that Halim owns 24.9% of Sumatec.

Thanks Kak Noraini..........

CEO Chris Dalton says that the deal for Borneo Energy “is the first step for Sumatec in its quest to be a large independent upstream oil and gas company.” Currently the vast majority of Malaysia’s oil and gas industry is controlled by the state-owned Petronas.
He adds that the purchase – expected to complete within the next six months – will give Sumatec access to combined reserves of 100m bbl of oil or more, “which can potentially contribute to as much as US$2.5bn in operating profit to Sumatec over the next ten years.”
