Global demand for nitrile exam gloves currently exceeds existing production capacity by an estimated 215 billion units, or nearly 40 percent. Raw material scarcity, port closures and delays, and a two-fold increase in gloves usage since June 2020 have exacerbated ongoing shortages.

In a January 2021 survey, Premier members cited access to exam gloves as the no. 2 greatest challenge to care for COVID-19 patients, after clinical staffing. And as of March 1, 2021, most Premier members have fewer than 30 days on hand.

Given this, many providers have been implementing glove conservation practices and other precautionary measures with the goal of increasing product days on hand and helping ensure a reliable supply of gloves.

Buyers Affected by Unavoidable Price Increases
The result of having a high demand for nitrile gloves, while at the same time, having a shortage, is that price increases are inevitable. A lack of manufacturers who can keep up with the demand, as well as shortages of raw materials, and everything in between, has caused distributors to be hit hard with higher costs. This, in turn, impacts the end-users who now have a higher price tag also.

In the end, having access to quality protective gloves, and safety in general, is priceless, and worth paying a little more to safeguard yourself and your staff.

TOKYO: The Japanese metropolis of Osaka is to declare a medical emergency as new COVID-19 infections climb to all-time highs, the Kyodo news agency reported on Wednesday.
New infections will likely exceed 800 a day and authorities in the prefecture are preparing to declare an emergency as the medical system comes under increasing strain, Kyodo reported, citing officials.

A spokesman for the Osaka prefecture could not confirm that infection figure when contacted by Reuters and said an emergency declaration was still being considered.

Health authorities are worried that variants of the coronavirus are causing a fourth wave of infections with just 107 days until the Tokyo Olympics are due to begin

KUALA LUMPUR (April 6): Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research has maintained its "overweight" stance on the rubber glove sector amid resurging global Covid-19 cases, which are expected to provide short-term support for demand.

The research house in a note today said this was despite recent price corrections and the ongoing labour freeze, adding that its top picks are Top Glove Corp Bhd ("buy"; target price [TP]: RM7), Hartalega Holdings Bhd ("buy"; TP: RM15.80) and Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd ("buy"; TP: RM5.22).

In a meeting with HLIB analyst Gan Huan Wen, Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) president Dr Supramanaim Shanmugam said the estimated supply of disposable gloves is set to increase by 22% to 420 billion pieces per annum in 2021, of which new Malaysian entrants will contribute 6.5 billion to 10 billion pieces, with numbers collated from the ASEAN Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association, new and existing rubber glove players locally, as well as the tracking of capacity expansion from other countries.

Let's review three reasons the demand has surged:
https://www.gloves.com/blogs/news/strong-demand-nitrile-gloves-2021
1. All Medical Facilities Require Hand Protection
Because of the risk of contracting or spreading the virus, all medical professionals have been advised to wear hand protection - from hospitals to independent physician's offices. Those physicians who were already using gloves have noted that their consumption has gone up by two boxes a day.

2. COVID Vaccine Rollouts Elevated the Demand for Nitrile Gloves
Reliable gloves are needed when administering the COVID vaccine, and distribution has recently started. This has greatly increased the need for hand protection. Additionally, the vaccine rollout will start to speed up as the months go by and will bring about an even higher urgency for nitrile gloves.

3. Increased Glove Use in Various Industries
As mentioned, there has been an increased use in the medical industry, which for obvious reasons, is a priority. However, this leaves other industries falling short on their own glove supplies. What is left is being requested for frontline workers such as grocery store clerks, post offices, airline staff, various small businesses, and many others.

(March 24): Overseas investors have been pulling out of Malaysian equities for 20 straight months. March could mark the turn of the tide.

Foreigners have poured a net US$97 million into local stocks this month through March 22, while withdrawing a combined US$1 billion from four other Southeast Asian markets tracked by Bloomberg.

The inflows come as valuation of Malaysia’s main equity gauge is now the cheapest in the region while the dividend yield of 3% is the highest among major Asia Pacific indexes after Singapore.

Foreigners becoming net buyers would mark a rare event for a market that saw global funds pull a record US$5.7 billion last year. That’s as political upheaval combined with the Covid-19 outbreak to sour sentiment even as local investors turned Malaysian glove makers into one of Asia’s hottest pandemic trades.

What Lies Ahead in 2021 for the Disposable Glove Industry?

No one, of course, knows what lies ahead. We expect a substantial part of 2021 to look a lot like what we saw in 2020. Glove prices will likely remain high, especially for nitrile and latex, and supply will struggle to keep up with demand.

Early 2021 will likely feel a lot like 2020. Glove prices will in many cases be going up until we see reduction in the scale of the pandemic. It is safe to say that supply, demand, and prices all will be reset at a completely different level than COVID-19.

New Delhi: Concern over an alarming increase in new coronavirus cases in India - 131,750 over the past 72 hours - was underlined Monday by a spike in the 'R', or 'reproduction rate', of the virus, which has jumped to 1.32 - the highest since April last year, when there were fewer than 27,000 cases.
The 'R' factor - a statistic used worldwide to track, and potentially, control the spread of the virus - is a measure of how many people are being infected by one infected person.

A 'R' of 2.0 indicates that one person with COVID-19 will, on average, infect two others. Each of those two will infect two more (spreading the disease to an average of four people) and so on.

According to former MARGMA president Denis Low Jau Foo, the global rubber glove shortage will continue until 2023, given that manufacturers are currently still in an “oversold” position. He anticipates that the average selling prices (ASPs) of gloves will not see a sharp fall, since most of the glove majors, who currently have big government contracts, are having difficulty in meeting demand.

Mr Supramaniam revealed that Malaysia’s rubber glove industry is expected to invest up to RM3 billion ($720 million) per year for capacity expansion, R&D and on automation to reduce reliance on foreign workers. Productivity in the country’s glove manufacturing sector has improved from needing 9.7 workers to produce 1 million gloves in 2008, to needing 1.7 workers to 1 million gloves in 2020, but he said the rubber glove industry aims to further improve this ratio to 1.5 workers for 1 million gloves by 2024.

Two coronavirus strains first detected in California are now officially "variants of concern," according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The variants may be about 20% more transmissible, the CDC said, citing early research. Some Covid-19 treatments may also be less effective against the strains. Still, the CDC didn't say that vaccines would stop working against them.
Still, health officials are concerned that some treatments may not work as well against the variants, which are officially called B.1.427 and B.1.429. Scientists have been monitoring the strains closely in California over the past few months.
The US Department of Health and Human Services recently halted shipments of a Covid-19 antibody treatment to California, Nevada and Arizona, where the variants are circulating widely.
