#Budget Preview* Budget rallies often followed by quick profit taking
Wednesday, 01 October 2014 14:25
KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 1): Our study shows that the FBM KLCI tends to rise during the week before Budget announcements.

The FBM KLCI’s gain a week prior to the Budget was seen in 11 out of 13 years previously. The 11 years posted an average gain of 1.1%.

The exception to the trend in 2002 was due to the market’s downtrend while in 2003, there was the SARS outbreak.

Apart from new Budget policies to be announced, the market performance is also subject to economic developments in the US, Europe and China (interest rate and financial stimulus), geopolitical tension in Iraq and the recent Hong Kong protests.

Investors should bear in mind that the budget rally this year, if any, would have a chance of facing immediate profit taking as shown by historical trend in the past 13 years.

Budget “rallies” are often followed by quick profit taking. Looking at the FBM KLCI's performance in the past years, we notice that investors tend to cash out after the Budget announcement as shown in 7 out of the 11 years when there were pre-budget gains.

LONDON (Sept 30): Brent oil steadied above $97 a barrel on Tuesday, supported by U.S. and Chinese economic data, but was still set for its deepest quarterly drop in more than two years because of strong supply and a surging dollar.

Brent crude has slumped since June, when it hit this year's high of $115.71. Strong supply, a strong dollar and lacklustre economic data drove prices to a 26-month trough last week.

Brent for November delivery was up 32 cents at $97.52 per barrel by 0958 GMT. It has lost more than 13 percent in the third quarter, its biggest quarterly drop since April-June 2012.

Rebound Fizzles Out For Malaysia’s Blue Chips

KUALA LUMPUR: A desperate rebound on Bursa Malaysia fizzled out on Tuesday, quashing investors’ hopes of a sustained window dressing as funds sold heavyweights including CIMB reflecting the cautious outlook for equities.

At 5pm, the FBM KLCI was down 0.03 of a point to 1,846.31, off the intra-day’s high of 1,854.21. Turnover was 2.73 billion shares valued at RM2.53bil. There were 355 gainers, 455 losers and 333 stocks unchanged.

Key regional markets were mostly lower following the rising tension in Hong Kong where the Hang Seng Index fell to a three-month low on Tuesday, finishing on its biggest monthly fall since May 2012 as investors dumped shares amid the city's worst civil unrest in decades.
