KUALA LUMPUR (April 4): Datasonic Group Bhd’s deputy managing director, Chew Ben Ben, has raised his direct stake in the company to 13.64% after acquiring 200,000 shares in the open market today.

According to the company's stock exchange filing, the shares were acquired at 82.8 sen apiece — which is a premium of 7.5% to the stock's closing price of 77 sen today. He also has an indirect stake of 11.34% in the company, bringing his latest shareholding to 24.98%.

Chew has been steadily upping his stake, which stood at 24.82% as at June 30 last year according to the group's 2017 annual report, this year.

Group managing director Datuk Abu Hanifah Noordin remains the single largest shareholder in the company, with a 28.37% stake in the company as at March 13. He too has upped his stake from 25.17% as at June 30 last year.

Datasonic’s shares were down seven sen or 8.33% at the close of trading hours, as the wider market fell into the red on news of China's retaliatary measures against the United States' new tariffs on Chinese imports. At 77 sen apiece, Datasonic has a market value of RM1.04 billion.
