Scomi powers Brazil monorail project

PETALING JAYA: Scomi Engineering Bhd’s monorail technology will power the São Paulo Line 18 project in Brazil, which is scheduled to begin early next year, says its chief executive officer Kanesan Veluppillai.

He said it would function as the technology provider to Consorcio ABC Integrado, which was awarded the Public Private Partnership project for a concession period of 25 years.

“We are honoured that Scomi’s technology is once again recognised in Brazil after two previous wins in Manaus and São Paulo for Line 17.

“Despite the challenging business environment, our key strategy of continuous improvement on our rail technology is earning us a growing reputation among cities around the world,” said Kanesan in a statement yesterday.

Scomi Engineering’s Brazil country president Hilmy Zaini Zainal said his team had been working closely with Consorcio ABC Integrado.

He said Scomi Engineering would provide services in design of rolling stock and track switches, supply of vehicle management system and bogies as well as system integration.

“While we are not part of the PPP consortium which owns the concession, we are gratified that the Companhia Do Metro in São Paulo has recognised Scomi as the technology provider to this project.

“We are also very pleased that this is our first project in Brazil where we will be involved in operations and maintenance support,” said Hilmy.

The Line 18 project spans 14.35km.

Malaysia Airlines boosts USA codeshares with American Airlines

Malaysia Airlines is ramping up its codeshares on American Airlines flights to and within the United States.
From July 11, the airline will place its code on AA’s daily Hong Kong-Dallas flight – allowing Malaysia Airlines customers to fly with their national carrier across to Hong Kong before picking up the journey with its Oneworld partner.
Currently, Malaysia Airlines customers bound for the United States fly through Tokyo Narita Airport before jumping on an AA or Japan Airlines flight to either Los Angeles or New York, as MH no longer flies to the land of the free.
Expanding on the reach of these existing codeshares, Malaysia Airlines will also apply its code to onward flights from these arrival hubs – allowing passengers to travel seamlessly and earn the highest number of Enrich miles.
From Los Angeles, the airline will codeshare to Austin, Chicago (O’Hare), Miami, Orlando, St. Louis and Washington (Reagan) from August 2 2014.
On the same date, codeshares commence from New York (JFK) to Austin, Chicago (O’Hare), Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami and Washington (Reagan).
For customers travelling from Australia, Malaysia Airlines flies directly to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide from its hub in Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysian government has launched the forward-thinking 2020 National Graphene Action Plan (Pelan Tindakan Graphene Kebangsaan 2020), with an ultimate aim of generating RM9 billion in revenue and creating 9000 jobs by 2020. Felda Global Ventures Holdings Berhad is already in the process of building a graphene manufacturing plant in Cambridge, with an expected opening date of October this year.
Known as the world’s strongest material, graphene’s inherent properties include a breaking strength that is 300 times greater than that of steel – but is only one atom thick, giving it a two-dimensional shape. Also, it is flexible and conducts electricity better than copper. Due to these properties, graphene is expected to replace silicon as the base for all electronics in the future.
The action plan is jointly developed by the National Agency for Innovation (Agensi Inovasi Malaysia – AIM), the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Unit Pengurusan Prestasi dan Perlaksanaan – PEMANDU) and NanoMalaysia Berhad. This plan was made based on research about Malaysia’s potential for graphene development and its possible value for the country’s economy.
According to Senator Datuk Seri Idris Jala, the plan will focus on these aspects of graphene development: lithium-ion anode batteries, ultra-capacitors, rubber additives, nano-drilling liquids, lubricants, conductive ink and plastic additives.
