Ringgit opens lower on lack of demand

The ringgit was traded lower against the US dollar Friday on lack of demand amid favourable economic outlook in the US, the world's largest economy, dealers said.

At 9am, the ringgit was quoted at 3.1140/1175 from yesterday's 3.1100/1120 close.

A dealer said investors cut their position in the ringgit to hold more dollars after the greenback soared recently due to the upbeat employment reports.

"We expect the US dollar to maintain its strength this week, riding on gradual improvement in outlook," he said.

Against other major currencies, the ringgit fell against the Singapore dollar to 2.4932/4978 from Thursday's 2.4884/4910 and weakened against the yen to 3.2363/2391 from 3.2241/2279 yesterday.

The local currency depreciated against the British pound to 4.6953/6986 from yesterday's 4.6435/6475 and eased against the euro to 4.0491/0524 from 4.0290/0319 Thursday.-- Bernama
