KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar this morning on renewed buying interest for the local currency amid the weakening greenback, dealers said.

At 9 am, the local unit was quoted at 3.0735/0765 against the US dollar compared with 3.0815/0845 at 5 pm on Thursday.

However, a dealer said sentiment remained bearish on persistent worries over the global economic outlook.

Meanwhile, the ringgit was traded lower against other major currencies.

The local unit declined against the Singapore dollar to 2.4744/4779 from 2.4688/4731 on Thursday and fell against the yen to 3.1578/1612 from 3.1076/1122 yesterday.

The ringgit depreciated against the British pound to 4.7922/7975 from 4.7588/7643 yesterday and weakened against the euro to 4.0693/0736 from 4.0442/0490 on Thursday. Bernama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. employers likely stepped up hiring only slightly in May, a sign the economy was growing modestly but not strongly enough to convince the Federal Reserve to scale back the amount of cash it is pumping into the banking system.
