He began his career in PETRONAS as an Electrical Engineer soon after graduating in 1976. He has held various senior positions in PETRONAS
including Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Penapisan (Melaka) Sdn Bhd and Malaysian Refining Company Sdn Bhd,
Vice President of Human Resource Management Division, Vice President for Gas Business and Vice President of Research & Technology Division of PETRONAS, the post he held until his retirement in December 2008.

Datuk Rahim also held directorships in several PETRONAS subsidiary companies including PETRONAS Gas Berhad, PETRONAS Dagangan
Berhad, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd and Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd, all of which he relinquished upon retirement.

He is the Honorary President of the IGU. During his presidency of IGU (2009-2012) the Malaysian Triennium successfully hosted the 25th World
Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur in 2012. He also helmed the presidency of the Asia Pacific Natural Gas Vehicle Association from 2003-2007 and the presidency of the Malaysian Gas Association from 2003-2013. 

He was the Vice Chancellor for Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) for five years (2012-2017). He was also the Vice Chancellor of University
Malaya (UM) for three years (2017-2020).

He was a Board member and Chairman of Joint Remuneration and Nomination Committee of Deleum Berhad and presently a Director of Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MiGHT).
