Mind Matters: How Divorce Affects Children

16-Jul-24 16:00

Lakshumy Kumar, Senior Manager, Consultancy and Training, Thrive Well | Dr Nicole Chen Lee Ping, President, Malaysian Marriage & Family Therapy Association

Divorce is tough on any family, but there is a unique impact on children, who can feel conflicted and anxious throughout the process. With a significant jump in divorce rates in Malaysia - the Department of Statistics reported a 43% increase from 2021 to 2022 - we need to keep an eye on how children are affected. Lakshumy Kumar, Senior Manager for Consultancy and Training at Thrive Well, and Dr Nicole Chen Lee Ping, President of the Malaysian Marriage & Family Therapy Association, join us on Mind Matters to dive into this, with a special focus on children who may be more vulnerable, such as those with special needs and from blended families.

This conversation may bring up difficult topics like suicide and self-harm. If you need to talk about your mental health problems, look for local support within your community, or call helplines like: Talian HEAL at 15555, MIASA's 24-hour helpline at 1-800-1800-66, or Befrienders KL at 03-7627 2929.
