Cambodian people are also called Khmers and most are descendants of the Angkor Empire, the most powerful in Southeast Asia having close cultural, political and trade relations with Java and Srivijaya empire both in the Indonesian archipelago.
The empire's official religions included Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism but now more of Theravada Buddism(non vegetarian). If you have visited the UNESCO site of Angkor in Siem Reap,Cambodia or Chandi Borobodur in Yogjakarta,Java Island Republic Indonesia, most of the temple's deity sculpture are dedicated to Hindu deity such as God Shiva.
The overall population of Cambodia is about 15.2million comprising Khmer 90%, Vietnamese 5%, Chinese 1%, others 4%. while the main official religion Buddhist (96.4%), and Muslim (2.1%)
Similar to Malaysian politics,Hun Sen's Cambodia People's Party dominated the country's politics since 1997 when he ousted fellow co-prime minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh. The government is very repressive, totalitarianism, human rights abuse, intimidations and manipulating of election to stay in power as long as he could resulting in many key opponents and activists in exile.Corruption thrives because of a lack of democracy and authoritarianism.
The Premier of Cambodia Samdech Techo Hun Sen congratulated the newly elected Malaysian leader after the PRU13 election and said:- “They (opposition parties) claimed the issues of ‘ghost’ names, inaccurate voter list, voter fraud, vote cheating-the election situation almost the same in Cambodia,”
This Malaysian billionaire(stock quote:3115) owned the only casino license in Phnom Penh and is the economic advisor to iron fisted Hun Sen.
Surely most of you readers have been to Siem Reap International Airport and Phnom Penh's Pochengtong Airport .For your info, the airport is jointly managed by Malaysia Airport Berhad and the airport exit tax is a hefty USD25 just for a small airport (950 acres/367 hectares) the size of Sungai Besi military base and not so modern.
In most instances I will boycott such payment and took a direct bus to Bangkok for just USD20 to experience the countryside. This brings me to the border town of Poipet near the Thai border town of Aranyaprathet.
Here lies the Ho Wah Genting Berhad casino in Poipet with more staffs than gamblers.
that Ho Wah Genting Berhad has entered into a Share Sale Agreement with Pioneer Hectares Sdn Bhd (the Purchaser) to dispose its entire 600 shares of 20,000 Riels each (approximately USD 3,600), representing 60% equity interest in Ho Wah Genting Poipet Casino Resorts Co., Ltd. (HWG Poipet Casino) to the Purchaser for a total cash consideration of MYR 1.00 only. As a result of the Proposed Disposal, HWG Poipet Casino shall cease to be a subsidiary of the Company.
Cambodia is a land for king gamblers and casinos are found everywhere as seen in the above map.
The nation of 15 million people has more than 25 casinos, but most are small affairs in rough-and-tumble border towns that cater to hard-core Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese gamblers.
In Poipet town beside Thai border and Bavet near the Vietnamese border town, you can count as many as ten casinos in each location but only expect weekends to have some crowds.
This one is the Titan King Casino and Resort in Bavet,Cambodia's largest gambling town near Vietnam border while on my way to Ho Chi Minh City(formerly Saigon) in Vietnam.A very luxurious casino hotel.
Bavet town can be regarded as a regional center for entertainment and relaxation much like Las Vegas and Macau.
Sorya Bus Company operated by Ho Wah Genting Bhd.
Got stuck in this Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh bus with a faulty aircond delaying my journey for 2 hours only to reach Saigon at 6:00pm in the evening stopping near Benthanh Market along Pham Ngu Lao Street. in Ho Chi Minh City.
Due to stiff competition in the land transport business with the many different bus companies competing for the Vietnamese route, the buses have been upgraded slightly.Sorya charges USD 12 while Malinh bus own by Viets cost USD10 much better services.
The Psar Thmey market shaped like an alien spacecraft in the heart of Phnom Penh as seen from the Sorya Shopping Mall owned by Ho Wah Genting.
