The very thing that makes e-scooters great - they're compact and easy to tote around - also happens to be a weakness. Because the tyres and spokes of the scooter are usually too small to thread a normal bicycle lock through, owners have to buy a special lock.
Depending on the e-scooter model and shape, a chain, shack or folding lock may be the best option. Scooter owners should always first test out whether the lock fits - and how well it fits - before considering the strongest lock material they can get, says Auto Club Europa.
But then, where should owners lock up their beloved two-wheeled transport? It depends on the rider: The spot between the footboard and handlebars is one option, as is the folding mechanism. Sometimes an eyelet is also built into the e-scooter for this very purpose.
Similar to a bicycle, Auto Club Europa recommends locking an e-scooter to a stable object. Only railings, street lamps and bicycle stands are technically specifically permitted for locking up to.
Of course, there is no such thing as 100% security. If the lock does get broken by a thief, at least there is one small consolation: Most e-scooters have a GPS tracker built in, meaning the owner can track where it is taken to by using an app on their phone.
