Because everything in your home must be connected, Philips and Spotify have teamed up so that the smart lightbulbs in your home light up to reflect the music you're listening to.

In future, the smart LED lights from Philips Hue will sync up to any track you're listening to on Spotify. The new feature works by creating an extended lighting script in the Hue app in real time for each song played.

The bulbs then light up, dim and change colour tone according to the mood, tempo, beat, pitch or volume of whatever you're listening to, according to Philips Hue manufacturer Signify.

It has the potential to be both fun at a house party, but also quite annoying, but thankfully there's a new Sync button in the Hue app to easily start and stop the synchronisation of lights and music.

Philips promises the light scripts are also easy enough to personalise. There is also the option to set the brightness or intensity of the lighting and to change the colour palette.

Apart from the monthly fee for the streaming service, the integration of Spotify in Philips Hue brings no extra costs for users. The new function is to be a fixed component of the Hue app from October onwards. Anyone who already wants to give it a go can sign up for an early access programme.
