A 50-year-old New Jersey man used a social media app to set up three phony online personas in order to trick at least five teenage girls into sending him nude photos and a video, authorities said on Oct 20.

Sunil Vaid, of North Brunswick, was charged Wednesday with one count of production of child pornography, the US Attorney’s Office for New Jersey said in a statement.

The app he used wasn’t disclosed in court papers. Federal prosecutors said Vaid set up three separate email accounts - one as a man seeking romance who could also help with modeling careers, one as a woman and one as a personal trainer - officials said. He then communicated via the app and solicited images from two 13-year-olds, two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old - mainly in 2020, according to charging documents.

One victim sent Vaid 81 “nude or near nude” images while another sent him 35 explicit photos. A third victim sent Vaid a three-minute video, according to court papers.

Vaid was ordered held in jail by a federal judge on Wednesday. He faces 15 to 30 years in federal prison if convicted. Attorney information wasn’t immediately available.
