In a trailer revealed at The Game Awards, Nexon has announced that it’s releasing The First Descendant in summer 2024. The four-player cooperative third-person shooter has built some buzz after its reveal and subsequent crossplay open beta on PC and consoles in September.

Built on Unreal 5.2, the game puts players in the role of a Descendant who has to fend off the Vulgus, alien invaders who crossed dimensions and brought colossi and destruction to the continent of Ingris. The Descendants are essentially hero characters that each have their own abilities. The new trailer shows two playable Descendants - Valby and Viessa - along with a mysterious third face.

The story-driven game has several elements going for it that makes it stand out from the free-to-play crowd.

First, it’s focused on co-op gameplay with a heavy dose of role-playing game elements as players defeat enemies and gather loot. It’s essentially a looter shooter.

Second, it features a grappling hook and parkour elements that make traversal and maneuvering around the battlefield different from other titles. It’s not a shooter where players run from cover to cover.

Third, the development team has already drastically changed the game based on user feedback, and that’s a good sign for a living game that this is expected to be.

In a recent post, game producer Lee Beom-jun said players can expect better cooperative play with matchmaking support for dungeon missions and improved mission design. Loadouts and module presets are also being added in advance for the summer 2024 launch on PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
