U.S. stock index futures edged lower on Tuesday, a day after the benchmark S&P 500 index hit a record high, as optimism over progress in U.S.-China trade talks subsided and a fresh threat of tariffs on Europe kept investors on edge.

E-Mini S&P 500


Stocks rose slightly on Tuesday, but gains were kept in check after the U.S. threatened a new wave of tariffs on European goods, dampening recent optimism surrounding the Washington-Beijing trade truce.


The S&P 500 climbed 0.3% to 2,973.01 and posted a record closing high. Losses in bank shares also kept lid on the broader markets; Citigroup shares fell 0.4% while Bank of America and Wells Fargo dropped more than 0.9% each.

Tuesday's session closes with the Nasdaq Composite Index at 8,109.09. The total shares traded for the Nasdaq was over 1.95 billion. Declining stocks led advancers by 1.29 to 1 ratio. 


The Nasdaq 100 index closed up 0.41% for the day; a total of 31.68 points. Xilinx. Inc. had the largest percent change down by -2.93% while O'Reilly Automotive Inc. advanced the most by 2.34%.

Hong Kong shares closed higher on Tuesday, as they played catch-up with a global rally seen in the previous session, when the island nation was closed for holiday, while doubts whether Washington and Beijing can pull off a trade deal capped gains.

 

The Hang Seng index ended up 1.2% at 28,875.56 points, while the China Enterprises Index closed 0.9% firmer at 10,981.23 points.

Oil prices fell about 3% on Tuesday, even after OPEC and allies including Russia agreed to extend supply cuts until next March, as weak manufacturing data had investors worried that a slowing global economy could dent oil demand.

Gold prices rose on Tuesday, a day after posting the biggest one-day percentage fall in 2-1/2 year, as U.S. Treasury yields fell on worries over global growth and renewed concerns over global trade.
