Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (9988.HK)

Alibaba is hiring over 2,000 fresh graduates this year, signalling that it views an end to China's tech crackdown. Alibaba's Taotian Group, which includes its Taobao and Tmall retail platforms, put out a massive recruitment ad targeting graduates, per a post on its WeChat account.

There are over 2,000 positions across various cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou up for grabs for those who graduate between November this year and October next year. The type of roles Taotian is hiring for runs the gamut, including those in technical roles, design, sales, and logistics.

Baidu Inc-Class A (9888.HK)

Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer Changan Automobile and technology company Baidu have jointly inaugurated a data center dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI). The facility is powered by Baidu's cloud offering and the Baige heterogeneous AI computing platform. The companies claim that the center has a computational capacity of 1.42 exaflops, likely on a low-precision AI benchmark.

The Changan Artificial Intelligence Data Center will be used for research and development of intelligent connected vehicles and autonomous driving and is hoped to speed up model train speeds by up to 125 times with a 40% improvement in GPU resource utilization once completed.

Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group (1929.Hk)

Hong Kong jewellery brand with over 7,200 stores worldwide, CHOW TAI FOOK, held a grand opening ceremony in Richmond, Vancouver on August 9, 2023. The Vancouver flagship store marks Chow Tai Fook’s first branch in Canada. To commemorate this special occasion, several senior executives from Chow Tai Fook attended the opening ceremony from overseas.

Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd (27.HK)

Galaxy Entertainment Group’s (GEG) 2QFY23 net revenue rose to HK$8.7bn (US$1.1bn), representing a 257% YoY a 23% QoQ increase. GEG reported a profit of HKD2.9bn (US$369m), compared to an HK$850.5m (US$109m) loss YoY.

GEG‘s chairman Lui Che Woo noted that the company’s Phase 4, currently under development despite its focus on non-gaming offerings, will also include gaming. Lui stated that GEG continues to move forward with Phase 4 construction, which will have a ‘strong focus on non-gaming’ activities, primarily targeting MICE, entertainment, and family facilities.

Tencent Holdings Ltd (700.HK)

Tencent Holdings founder and chief executive Pony Ma Huateng said the internet giant will develop artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and use them for human good, while acknowledging the potential for “huge pain”.

Tencent has already deployed AI technologies to applications that aim to solve social issues, according to the report. For instance, the company’s AI-powered noise cancelling technology is used in the Zoom-like Tencent Meeting to help senior citizens with hearing difficulties.

The company started to release its social values report last year, when it pledged to keep moving towards serving society despite slower business growth.
