PETALING JAYA, May 21 — Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown is optimistic that the new Pakatan Harapan federal government will not lose sight of the corruption allegations involving Sarawak Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud.

But the London-based writer, who is in Malaysia now for a short visit after no longer facing prosecution over her exposé on the financial scandal at 1 Malaysia Development Bhd, suggested she may not be the one to push this government to probe the Sarawak leader’s wealth.

Instead, she felt PH’s victory has helped free the press from the grip of the old regime and she is confident that this would push local journalists to take up the mantle as the fourth estate that will hold any corrupt leaders accountable.

“I think we should give this PH government some time to breathe,” she told Malay Mail in an exclusive interview.

“If it’s not (me) I’m sure the journalists here will do the job,” she said when asked if she felt her job is done now that the Malaysian authorities are finally investigating the mass financial embezzlement scandal at 1MDB.
