RECENTLY, UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi made a pledge to secure the release of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is currently imprisoned.

During the UMNO General Assembly 2024, Zahid expressed his commitment through a heartfelt poem dedicated to Najib, emphasising their shared struggles and Najib’s contributions to the party.

Zahid’s poetic tribute moved the audience, besides highlighting his dedication to freeing Najib and continuing their political work together.

Besides Zahid, his daughter Nurul Hidayah also showed emotions when speaking about Najib and his rather ‘tainted’ contributions to the party and country.

Najib’s daughter was also heard lamenting on the fate of her dear father who is lingering behind bars.

But the internet did not make much of the calls for the freedom of the man accused of being one of the masterminds of the devastating 1MDB scandal.

On Facebook, most of the comments are about the perceived crocodile tears from the party president, with netizens asking what he was doing all the while in government?

A user commented that this is no longer the era of Barisan Nasional (BN) where they could act with impunity, including meddling in court affairs.

He urged Umno and Zahid to accept Najib’s current situation now that his sentence has been reduced.

To highlight the disparity between the privileged and the common folks, he further reminded the Deputy Prime Minister that there are poor individuals who had stolen a tin of Milo and never received any clemency.

Another user noted that Zahid, being the DPM could talk to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about that or to the Menteri Wilayah.

Most of the comments were not in favour of Najib being freed. - Aug 25, 2024
