Anwar eyes GE15 as new PM grapples with inauspicious numbers

HAVING been deprived another premiership opportunity, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibarhim’s ‘next train’ might arrive as early as next year or 2023 vis-à-vis the 15th General Election (GE15).

The 74 year-old Opposition leader-cum-Port Dickson MP spots a man whose patience never run thin when he gentlemanly accepts the appointment of Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob yesterday (Aug 20) in accordance with the law.

“We take note that the decision was in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Constitution, parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy,” he pointed out in a statement. “For the Opposition, this is a challenge for us to work harder to face the GE15.”

He further urged every party leader, member and supporter to accept the decision with a clear determination to work harder to face the general election “so that (the Opposition) can once again win the people’s mandate received in the last election”.

For now, Anwar said the focal point is to put in effort to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure Malaysia’s economy will rebound for the sake of the people.

On a more trivial side, self-proclaimed numerologists have expressed ‘concerns’ that the swearing-in date for the new PM, which is today – or the 14th day of seventh lunar month as per the Chinese lunar calendar – is most inauspicious.

“Today (Aug 21) is the eve of Hungry Ghost Festival which falls on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month every year which is tomorrow (Aug 22),” said a WhatsApp message which has gone viral.

“As we are aware, this is the time of the year when gates of the underworld open up, spirits and ghouls of the departed escape and roam the earth.

“Very ghostly indeed especially when he also has the support of 114 MPs which in Cantonese is pronounced as yat yat sei (literally ‘every day die’).”

On the hindsight, however, the new PM may take solace in his “beautiful” date of birth – Jan 18, 1961 – which can be taken to mean yat yat fatt (literally ‘every day prosper’).

For the record, Anwar had garnered the support of 105 MPs while Ismail managed to rope in the support of 114 MPs.

A total of 111 MPs were needed for a simple majority. There are 220 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat and two vacant seats. – Aug 21, 2021
