KUALA LUMPUR: Umno should be dissolved because it is no longer the Umno that fights for race, religion and nation.

Gerakan Tanah Air chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the Umno now was only a party that supported imprisoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"Their (Umno members) support for Najib is not because they are loyal, but because of money," he said in a short video posted on his social media accounts today.

He claimed the reason Umno lost in the 14th General Election (GE14) was because it no longer championed the Malays, Islam and the country. 

Since their defeat in 2018, said Dr Mahathir, many Umno representatives left to join other parties, including Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), a party the 97-year-old had co-founded.

"Yes, I told (Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad) Zahid (Hamidi) to dissolve Umno.

"Umno is no longer (the same) Umno. That's why Umno needs to be dissolved," he said in the 45-second clip.
