FORMER prime minister (PM) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday (Feb 18) that he was called up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) but he was not a suspect in the Jana Wibawa project.

However, Berita Harian reported today that the MACC through a source, confirmed the contrary, saying the former PM is among the suspects investigated for the Jana Wibawa project.

The source said that Muhyiddin was called a suspect in the investigation when he was called to testify at the MACC headquarters last week.

In a meeting with the media yesterday, Muhyiddin claimed that the questions asked of him by the authorities conducting the probe were not related to the RM600 bil that his government is accused of mismanaging, but rather to the money that entered Bersatu’s account.

Muhyiddin should not give speculative comments because that could interfere with the MACC investigation, said the Malay online portal based on information from the sources.

Investigations are also underway against several individuals, including the former finance minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz whom Muhyiddin said was the man responsible for the decision-making in the Jana Wibawa project.

Moreover, Muhyiddin had also said he has no idea who the donors are who banked the Rm300 mil in the Bersatu accounts.

He further added that he provided good cooperation when giving statements and that the MACC was also very professional.

Muhyiddin also threatened that legal action would be taken against certain individuals, including PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for slander.

“It is not fair that the government of the day put the focus on me when it was the finance minister then which made the decisions,” The Star reported Muhyiddin as saying.

The former PM claimed that Anwar deliberately made several claims to smear his name by raising the issue of corruption and misuse, which he allegedly committed when he led the government.

“This is not fair. The prime minister may not be ‘fully aware.’ I had served as the prime minister. One should not have made such a statement, throwing all kinds of accusations (against me).” - Feb 19, 2023
