KUALA LUMPUR: The Sang Saka Bangsa flag was raised at Plaza Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTC) this morning at 8.14am, in a symbolic start to the 2023 Umno General Assembly.

Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi raised the flag, accompanied by the singing of the Umno song, 'Bersatu, Bersetia, Berkhidmat' by the delegates present.

He was accompanied by deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and executive secretary Datuk Sumali Reduan at the stage.

Present was Umno vice- presidents Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

Earlier, the ceremony began with Zahid witnessing Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, followed by Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and Puteri chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi, hoisting the Sang Saka Bangsa flag, accompanied by songs of the respective party wings.

Today marks the start of the Umno General Assembly, with the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings' assemblies having concluded yesterday.

A total of 6,341 Umno delegates are attending the general assembly this year.

Of the total, 2,888 delegates will attend the main general assembly; 1,159 for the Wanita assembly; 1,160 for Youth; and 1,134 for Puteri.

The general assembly kicked off on Wednesday with a closed-door briefing session by Zahid, followed by a simultaneous launching of the Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings' assemblies by Mohamad that night.
