KEMAMAN: Newly-elected Kemaman member of parliament Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has expressed a willingness to consider the prospect of becoming Malaysia's prime minister in the future.

The Terengganu Menteri Besar - fondly known as Dr Sam - said he would contemplate the matter if entrusted by his party and the electorate.

"When I joined politics, it was never my objective to hold such high position (prime minister) but maybe in the future, if given the mandate by the party and people... then I will consider the matter," he told reporters at the vote tallying centre at Dewan Berlian of the Kemaman Municipal Council here.

Ahmad Samsuri secured a significant victory by retaining the Kemaman seat with a substantial majority of 37,220 votes. He secured 64,998 votes while Barisan Nasional's General (Rtd) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor bagged 27,778 votes.

Despite talks by various political leaders, including Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, acknowledging his potential to lead the country, Ahmad Samsuri remains steadfast in focusing on his role as an elected representative.

"Let me go to Parliament first. There are things that I will look into with the assistance from my friends in Parliament for the well-being of the people in Kemaman and Terengganu," he said.

Additionally, Ahmad Samsuri dismissed the idea of proclaiming a special public holiday to commemorate his victory in the by-election, saying such action might be perceived as a conflict of interest and an individual celebration.
