KUCHING (Feb 27): Bintulu Port, the flagship container port in Sarawak, aspires to become a premier green energy port to meet the world’s need for green and clean energy.

Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd group chief executive officer Ruslan Abdul Ghani said this aspiration is in line with the vision of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to make Sarawak an economic powerhouse and spearhead of green and clean energy production in Malaysia.

“We realise that having a strong infrastructure, especially an efficient and well operated port, would be key in achieving that vision,” he said at the Bintulu Port Media Appreciation Night here.

The event was also attended by Bintulu Port Holdings chairman Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, who is also the Sarawak State Secretary.

Ruslan said that while Bintulu Port is an integrated port that is not only for exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG), it is equipped with the largest LNG export terminal in East Asia.

“The biggest container terminal in East Malaysia, [with a bigger volume] than all the containers handled by a total of eight Sabah ports combined. [It is] the main export outlet of palm oil products for Sarawak, accounting for 95% of its exports at around four million tonnes per annum, and we are ranked third in the whole of Malaysia at around 50 million tonnes per annum,” he said.

He said that in terms of value over product cost, Bintulu Port could very well be number one, especially due to the presence of some 450 LNG vessels used for transporting the gas for exports yearly.

“My back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that Bintulu Port and Samalaju Port combined would handle nearly half a trillion ringgit worth of products per annum,” he said, adding that Bintulu Port Holdings is also the sole licence holder for operating a full fledged oil and gas supply base for Sarawak.
