KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry (MOT) today explained that the RM190 million MySikap contract award to HeiTech Padu Bhd, which is deemed high, is for a longer duration of three years.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the contract involved a three-year maintenance job for the MySikap [driver and vehicle information] system, covering both software and hardware components, as well as servers at Road Transport Department Center (RTD) offices nationwide.

On Monday, HeiTech Padu announced that it had received a RM190 million contract award from RTD.

Meanwhile, Loke said the road tax or Motor Vehicle License (LKM) for electric vehicles (EVs) will be charged at a lower rate after the initiative for EVs ends at the end of this year.

He said, MOT will announce the road tax rate for EVs by the end of this month or the beginning of next month at the latest.

"I said (generally) in April or early May," he said.

Previously, Loke was reported to have said that a more competitive road tax or LKM structure for EVs will be announced as an effort to spur the use of the vehicle.

He said the road tax structure will only apply after 2025, which is after the end of the road tax exemption period for EV vehicles.Loke also welcomed  the private sector to build EV charging stations in the country.

"This is in line with the government's hope for a target of 10,000 EV charging stations operating in the country by 2025.

"Of course this requires investment from the private sector for EV charging stations to be placed in strategic locations on highways, where people are," he said.
