MELAKA: Umno will discuss the fate of former Melaka deputy liaison chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, who was reported to submit membership form to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), next week.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the matter would be discussed with party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi following an official complaint from the Tangga Batu division recently.

Asyraf said evidence of Mohamad Ali's membership in Bersatu was also submitted in the report lodged.

"We will discuss this at the supreme council meeting next week, and if it is proven that he has become a member of Bersatu, then his membership (in Umno) will be revoked.

"Based on Article 20 of the party's constitution, any party member who becomes a registered member of another political party will have their membership revoked after confirmation by the supreme council," he told reporters after officiating the Umno Tangga Batu division annual conference at the Hang Jebat Stadium, Krubong, here today.

Also present was the division chief Datuk Rais Yasin.

Previously, former Melaka chief minister and Bersatu information committee member Tan Sri Rahim Tamby Chik confirmed that Mohamad Ali had registered as a party member on April 12.

He said Mohamad Ali, who is also the former Umno Tangga Batu division chief, was alleged to have planned to open more than 20 branches of the opposition party in Tangga Batu ahead of the 16th general election.

In the Umno polls on March 18 last year, Mohamad Ali, lost by a majority of four votes, receiving 278 votes, while Rais garnered 282 votes in the two-cornered contest.

Ahmad Zahid then confirmed the validity of Rais' victory after there were reports that the Paya Rumput assemblyman's victory as Umno Tangga Batu division chief in the election was nullified by the 2023 Umno Malaysia election protest committee.

Meanwhile, Rais confirmed that the Umno Tangga Batu Division had lodged an official complaint on Mohamad Ali joining Bersatu.

"The Umno Tangga Batu division committee recently held a meeting and unanimously decided to lodge an official complaint to the Umno Headquarters," he said.
