KUCHING: A salary review for the Sarawak civil service to ensure competitive pay will be completed soon, says Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

He said the review was undertaken following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement of a 13% pay hike for federal civil servants starting this December.

"The Sarawak government welcomes this announcement and will also revise the salaries of state civil servants in appreciation of their commitment and sacrifice.

"We are currently conducting a detailed study so that the salaries of state civil servants will be more competitive following their duties and responsibilities as well as the state government's financial position," Abang Johari told the Sarawak Legislative Assembly in his winding-up speech on Wednesday (May 15).

He said the results of the study would be announced soon, subject to the details of the salary increase for the federal civil service.

Separately, Abang Johari said Sarawak would set up a Climate Change Centre to coordinate, manage and support climate change initiatives and carbon trading in the state.

He said a study on establishing the centre was now completed, paving the way for its upcoming development.

In addition, a climate change policy would be formulated to establish a carbon footprint baseline for Sarawak.

"This effort will empower communities, businesses and policymakers to tackle emissions and promote low-carbon technologies towards a sustainable future for Sarawak.

"We are also crafting low-carbon society blueprints to improve waste and flood management, cut urban carbon emissions and promote green technology and practices to minimise climate change impacts," he said.
