KUCHING: Artificial intelligence (AI) presents significant challenges to journalism it tests the integrity of reports, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg today.

He said AI allowed the creation of things that did not exist, making it difficult to verify reports generated using this technology.

"The rapid advancement of technology with AI is a remarkable evolution in journalism when used by experts.

"With AI, even deceased individuals can be brought back to life, making it unclear whether what is presented is genuine."

He said this after opening the inaugural Sarawak Media Conference here, held in conjunction with the National Journalists Day (Hawana) celebration here.

Present were Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Mohd Asfia Awang Nasar, Sarawak Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi and Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Ukas), Datuk Abdullah Saidol.

Abang Johari said responsible journalists must find ways to prevent the spread of fake news following the explosion of AI.

"I suggest that journalists (through their associations) who have a sense of responsibility to the prosperity of not only the country but also all stakeholders, outline a code of ethics for AI use.

"With AI, my speech can be translated into Mandarin or English with lip movements matching what is being said, and this is our challenge in the media."

He thanked the federal government, particularly the communications minister, for hosting the Hawana celebration outside Peninsular Malaysia for the first time and selecting Sarawak as the host.

"Through this celebration, we can gather journalists to discuss the direction of the media industry given the rapid transformation happening."
