Could PH’s desperation to court PAS stem for rising concerns that “big cracks” are emerging in UMNO?

AN opposition-slant social media influencer has by far offered the most probable reason as to why of late Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders have been ‘shamelessly’ courting or giving the impression that PAS is supposedly in talks with the ruling coalition to join the Madani government.

Ibnu Janie who called himself a media practitioner claimed that he has heard from a reliable source that there is an on-going “massive movement” within UMNO which is PH’s key ally to leave the unity government.

“Therefore, persuading PAS to join the Madani government is to save Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s government and preventing it from collapsing,” justified Ibnu Janie in a Facebook post.

“Unfortunately, PAS leaders have no appetite and would never accept such invitation from any party that has relentlessly been ‘pissing’ on and causing a lot of hardship to the people.”

Deliberating further, Ibnu Janie who is also a political observer had in an earlier FB post contended that “there were indeed efforts made by PH to send their representatives to persuade PAS to join the government”.

“It is believed that PH is getting desperate to win Malay votes which are now controlled by PAS and Perikatan Nasional (PN),” justified Ibnu Janie.

“They (PH’s top brass) are also worried that the unity government may not be able to survive the GE16 (16th General Election) which may take place simultaneously earlier, ie next year.”

It has been an open secret that UMNO is increasingly losing Malay support due to the disappointment of its members with the once most powerful Malay party’s collusion with DAP who is a dominant component party in the PH coalition.

Recall the statement by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil who recently claimed that PM Anwar had held numerous discussions with several leaders from PAS, indicating on-going negotiations and considerations about the Islamist party joining the unity government.

But such notion was shot down by PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahiun Tuan Man with one Tamil word - “poodah” (an equivalent of “go fly kite” in this context) and subsequently by its secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan as “Fahmi’s own imagination and has nothing to do with PAS or political reality”.

PAS’s denial aside, the rift between UMNO president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi and his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan (fondly known as Tok Mat) over the indirect participation of global fund manager BlackRock in the privatisation deal of airports operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) would provide a bigger tell-tale sign.

Zahid who is also the Deputy PM has brushed aside Tok Mat’s reservations about the Madani government proceeding to seal the deal with the presence of BlackRock which is expected to complete its acquisition of consortium partner Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) in 3Q 2024 as the latter’s “personal view”.

“It’s therefore fitting that lately many senior UMNO leaders have been more daring to voice differing opinions from the Madanon (Anwar’s Madani) government,” added Ibnu Janie. - June 26, 2024
