KUCHING (June 18): Miri Port, located in northern Sarawak, will become another deepsea port in the state capable of handling all types of cargoes and cruise vessels, Sarawak deputy premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said.

Uggah, who is also Sarawak infrastructure and ports development minister, said the development of the port, sited at Kuala Baram at the north end of the city of Miri, would stimulate other economic activities such as shipbuilding, repairs and supply chains.

“Miri Port will be able to contribute towards the state economic growth besides offering economic spin-offs to logistics and business distributions,” he said at a contract signing ceremony between Miri Port Authority and Rimbun Prima Sdn Bhd to deepen the access channel and construct training bund for the port here on Tuesday.

Uggah said the construction of the bund to deepen the water to over 25 metres is expected to be completed by March 2027 and will allow Kuala Baram to be a strategic and suitable location for the deep-sea port development.

He said Rimbun Prima had brought China Communications Constructions Company (CCCC), which has experience of developing a similar project in Shanghai, China, into a joint-venture to work on the Miri port’s bund construction.

“It is the hopes and expectation of the Sarawak Government and its people for you (the contractor) to implement and complete the project on time,” he added.
