JOHOR BARU: Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has mooted the setting up of a Johor Talent Development Council, which will help create a highly skilled workforce to meet the demands of investors.

The Johor Mentri Besar added that having such a council would be key in ensuring the success of Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

“Soon, the agreement pertaining to JS-SEZ will be signed by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Singapore counterpart.

“JS-SEZ is expected to be the catalyst of economic growth in Johor and I am confident that through the special economic zone, more than 100,000 jobs will be created,” he added.

Onn Hafiz said this in his speech before officiating National Training Week (NTW) 2024 organised by Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) at Southern University College here on Monday (June 24).

He added the state government has already discussed with the Human Resource Ministry, through HRD Corp, to collaborate with others that would not only benefit Johoreans but Malaysians in general that want to work in JS-SEZ by upgrading their skills.

Onn Hafiz said the vision to make Johor a developed state by 2030 can be achieve by providing opportunities to locals to reskilling and upskilling their talents.

“To make Johor a developed state, we cannot move on our own. We have to make sure that agencies, both at the federal and state levels, can collaborate.

“This is to ensure that what we want to achieve both at the federal and state levels can be aligned for the common good where what is most important is to make sure that the people are ready to face such challenges,” he added.

Onn Hafjz said that the state government has organised various workshops to identify what can be done to make JS-SEZ a success such as addressing ease of movement and doing business.

“We also want to make sure that there is enough talent for JS-SEZ where all federal and state agencies can work closely with one another.

“The proposed council will consist of federal and state agencies where the Human Resource Ministry can be its secretariat,” he added.

Onn Hafiz said that the council was just a suggestion but the JS-SEZ is not just a state agenda but a national agenda as Johor can become the new economic engine for Malaysia.
