NIBONG TEBAL: The anti-government protest in Putrajaya is proof that the Madani government respects the public's right to assemble, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

"This in fact, confirms that Malaysia under Madani administration respects the (public's) right to assemble, the right to peaceful gatherings, and the right to criticise and critique the government," said the Home Minister.

Speaking after attending the XPRESI GenTa (Generasi Kita) programme at Chong Kuang Hall, in Sungai Bakap on Saturday (June 29), Saifuddin said that despite the protest, the Sungai Bakap by-election would not be affected.

The PKR secretary-general also mocked those who participated in the protest by saying that he thought it was supposed to be attended by 100,000 people but only 100 showed up.

On Saturday (June 29) a crowd of protesters, mostly attired in black, turned up for the anti-government rally opposite the Prime Minister's official residence at the Seri Perdana Complex.

The crowd started to converge more than an hour before the rally commenced at about 5pm at an open car park adjacent to the complex.

On Thursday (June 27) Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa had warned that the rally was illegal.

He had said that although the organisers submitted a notice to the police on June 14, they had not obtained permission from the venue owner - Putrajaya Corporation.
