IPOH: Logging activities should have minimal impact on its surroundings, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

"Logging activities can only be conducted if an environmental impact assessment has been undertaken.

"Normally, if an area has been taken out from a forest reserve, it can be logged," said the Perak menteri besar after opening the state-level Unity Week celebration at Dataran Bandaraya Ipoh here on Sunday (June 30).

"I do not have more details, but I believe that the (logging) area will be replaced," he added.

Saarani said this in response to Sahabat Alam Malaysia field officer Meor Razak Meor Abdul Rahman, who, on Thursday (June 27), questioned why the state has allowed logging activities to be held at the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve in Manjung.

Meor Razak claimed that the 50ha of land there had been classified as a protection forest, which mitigates or prevents the impacts of natural hazards such as landslides and flooding.

He also said that folk living near the forest reserve are worried about the impact on the ecosystem, especially in the coastal area of Teluk Senangin.
