KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia remains steadfast and committed to continuing its ongoing legal action at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Netherlands against those responsible for the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke (pic).

As the 10th anniversary of the downing of MH17 in Ukraine approached, he said Malaysia would continue its legal action at the international level together with other countries that had also lost their citizens in the tragedy.

Tomorrow will mark the 10th anniversary of the tragedy of MH17, which was shot down in Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 passengers and crew, including 80 children.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who recounted his trip to Ukraine about two weeks after the incident in 2014, said he had left for the site where the plane crashed with the then inspector-general of police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to ascertain what had led to the tragedy.

He said he learnt then that Russian-backed separatists had targeted a Ukrainian aircraft but mistook the MH17 aircraft – a Boeing 777 which supposedly appeared similar – for the other airplane.

Ahmad Zahid said this led to the separatists launching a missile operating on an analogue system and it ended up hitting the Malaysia Airlines aircraft.
