GEORGE TOWN: After witnessing a harrowing accident where a man’s leg was nearly severed, Beh Kean Meng is well aware of the urgent need for immediate medical assistance.

For the past six years, Beh has been a familiar figure in town as he races to emergencies on his motorcycle.

Equipped with a first aid kit and life-saving gear, Beh has transformed his compassion into action.

“I still remember that horrific accident where a person’s leg was nearly severed but nobody was able to provide immediate help at the scene.

“Everyone looked helpless. That was when I felt compelled to hone my knowledge and skill in providing immediate medical aid,” said the 31-year-old.

Determined to make a difference, Beh bought his own life- saving equipment and medical supplies to respond to emergencies and provide immediate assistance to affected victims.

He also took up courses on basic life support, advanced first aid, as well as air and water rescue techniques.

In addition, Beh attended extensive training at the Penang Hospital and with St John Ambulance too.

As a full-time ambulance crew of a private company, he continues to offer his assistance whenever possible once his shifts are over.

As a member of the Penang Mutiara Charity and Voluntary Association (PSM), he has access to better resources and support, further enhancing his ability to help those in distress.

Recalling one of his roller coaster experiences as a first responder, Beh said there was a person who collapsed while playing badminton.

“We rushed there and started performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.

“We managed to save him initially, but several days later, he died due to kidney failure.

“It took me a while to recover from that episode.

“Life can be so unpredictable,” he said.

Beh’s unwavering commitment to saving lives, both on and off duty, exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and community service.

His story is a testament to the difference one can make through selfless dedication and a desire to help others.

Beh also shared that his girlfriend, who works as a nurse at a private hospital, and his mother, are his biggest sources of inspiration and support.

“Whenever I am off duty from my job, I will always bring my first aid kit with me, so that I can help during any emergency.

“For me, saving lives is important, regardless of race and religion. It will bring us good karma and a sense of fulfilment,” he said.
