PETALING JAYA: The Dewan Rakyat condemns the "cruel" and "violent" assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, says Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. I express my condolences to the people of Palestine on the ‘syahid’ death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and his bodyguard in the Zionist regime’s raid at his residence in Tehran," Johari said in a post on X.

"The Dewan Rakyat condemns this (act of) cruelty and violence," he added.

Johari, who is also in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, expressed his solidarity and prayers to the people of Palestine.

Earlier, international news agencies reported that Israel attacked Ismail's residence in Tehran, resulting in his martyrdom and the death of one of his officers.

The Foreign Ministry also condemned the assassination as an act of violence to be condemned.

"Malaysia unequivocally condemns all acts of violence, including targeted assassination, and urges all peace-loving nations to join in denouncing such acts," Wisma Putra said in a statement on Wednesday (July 31).

It added that this assassination by Israel underscores the need for de-escalation and reinforces the necessity for all parties to engage in constructive dialogue and pursue peaceful resolutions.
