DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) has hit out at UMNO Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh for unceremoniously attacking remarks by the party’s secretary-general that fund-raising events for Chinese vernacular schools can continue as long as guidelines are followed.

The youth wing of DAP further called on the vocal Merlimau state assemblyman to be a responsible and reasonable youth leader by stopping to incite racial and religious sentiments maliciously alongside opposition parties such as PAS.

DAPSY alleged that Akmal is “still blindly criticising” Loke as the “acting Education Minister” while making baseless accusations against the Transport Minister.

”All the nonsensical remarks reflect that Akmal doesn’t fully grasp the democracy system in Malaysia but is merely interested in inciting emotions and creating confrontation in our multi-racial society,” lambasted DAPSY national varsity affairs bureau director Ho Chi Yang in a statement.

“Loke has earlier mentioned that fund-raising events for vernacular schools in which beer companies are involved have been organised for a long time without issue and can continue as long as no Muslim pupils are involved.”

On this note, DAPSY accused Akmal of having “acted like a hero by brazenly sensationalising racial and religious issues that were played up by the opposition parties”.

“Such an action will not bring about any benefit to the unity government but will gradually destroy the very foundation of our multi-cultural society,” argued Ho who is also the Tanah Rata state assemblyman.

“Even UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin recently refuted PN (Perikatan Nasional) and PAS for their hypocrisy by pointing out that the previous government also utilised funds collected from alcohol and gambling companies to fund vernacular schools for many years.

“However, Akmal chose to ignore the statement outright by unreasonably criticised the unity government.”

Ho also lamented that the Melaka rural development, agriculture and food security committee chairman was fixated on attacking the unity government by taking the cue from PAS which played up the fund-raising event for Chinese vernacular schools with the obvious attempt to undermine the unity government.

“For the record, the fund-raising event which was embroiled in controversy has been organised for 30 years to raise funds for the Chinese vernacular schools from the private sector to repair schools’ infrastructures and elevate our education quality as a whole,” justified Ho.

“As such, many of us can’t help but question if Akmal is becoming a bad political role model for the younger generation by destroying the multi-cultural society that our forefathers built and struggled for.” - July 31, 2024
