KOTA KINABALU: A motion to free former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and seek justice for him was brought up at the recent Kota Belud division Umno delegates meeting, says division chief Azuwan Marjan Norjan.

He said that party divisions nationwide are feeling the loss of the former leader, adding that Najib contributed a lot to the country as an ex-Prime Minister and as a leader in Umno.

“Under the principle of seeking fair and just treatment, we hoped Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim under the Madani government of today would also uphold the same spirit.

“Umno leaders have made an effort for this, and hopefully the voice to stand up for Najib will continue until he receives fair treatment,” said Azuwan.

He said this in a statement following a speech he delivered at the delegates meeting at Dewan Kompleks Sukan Kampung Botung, Kota Belud last Saturday.

The event was officiated by party secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and was also attended by Sabah Umno deputy chief Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

Azuwan also refuted statements by local parties in Sabah urging people to reject national parties, which they claimed to have seized the rights of Sabahans.

“Umno has been in Sabah for 33 years; if there is any truth, I hope they will come forward with evidence. The sentiments being played by certain leaders are dangerous and can affect the unity and harmony in the country," he said.

Azuwan added that the state Umno is being led by Sabahans, saying that any claim contrary to this is aimed at bringing political leverage for certain quarters.

Meanwhile, Dr Asyraf said in his speech that he hopes people in Sabah will not be influenced by such claims as a formula of working with national parties has brought change to the state.

"National parties have brought back the rights of Sabahans," said Dr Asyraf.
