KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has offered Malaysia's assistance in helping and supporting the Bangladesh interim government.

Anwar, who made a phone call to Bangladesh's interim government Chief Advisor Prof Muhammad Yunus yesterday, said the leader had long-standing ties with Malaysia.

"Thus, I assured him that Malaysia was ready to help and support the interim government in rebuilding and restoring peace and security in Bangladesh," he said in a Facebook post.

"I am very pleased that Yunus has given his assurances to protect the rights of all Bangladeshis including minorities.

"He has also invited me to undertake a short visit to Bangladesh as soon as possible to further strengthen the brotherly relationship between the two countries," he said, describing Yunus as an "old friend".

Yunus is Bangaldesh's Nobel-winning microfinance pioneer. He leads the interim government after longtime prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled following mass protests.
