PAS has taken Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to task for revoking the 2019 ban on the trilingual comic book Belt and Road Initiative for Win-Winism by former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau a.k.a. Superman Hew.

The revocation was carried in a federal government gazette dated Aug 12 based on an order signed by Saifuddin dated Aug 6.

PAS Youth deputy president Muhammad Hanif Jamaluddin pointed to the Home Ministry’s prohibition order dated Oct 23, 2019 on the book which Malay version is entitled Inisiatif Jalur Dan Jalan Meraih Manfaat Bersama on grounds that its content may be harmful to public order and safety.

“This comic further tries to promote the communism and socialism ideology, spreads false and misleading facts about communism, and contains elements to arouse support and sympathy for the communist cause,” Hanif penned on his Facebook page.

“This can also raise doubts among readers, especially the younger generation, about the Malaysian history while disputing the efforts and struggles of previous national figures/leaders in fighting for independence and developing the country.”

On that note, Hanif took a jab at UMNO for not opposing the lifting of the ban on Superman Hew’s book when it clearly undermined now incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“This comic clearly pokes fun at Najib. Where is the voice of the UMNO grassroots who love and cherish the party’s struggle?” he teased. “Why is the Home Ministry through its minister Saifuddin rescinds its ban on the comic book?

Meanwhile, UMMO Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh’s immediate reaction is that although the court has made a decision, “it is by no means that we’ll agree”.

“To avoid injustice, we urge the government to consider filing an application to review this decision in accordance with the existing powers of the Federal Court under the Federal Court Rules 1995,” he suggested on his Facebook post.

“Although the decision of the Court of Appeal on July 26, 2022 (during the rule of the Barisan Nasional-Perikatan Nasional administration) decided that this comic did not affect public order, the government of the day had filed an appeal to the Federal Court to reinstate the ban but failed.”

Added the rightist Merlimau state assemblyman: “Whoever the government is, the sensitivities of the Muslim Malay majority must be prioritised and preserved to ensure the stability of this country” - Aug 14, 2024
