PUTRAJAYA: The court case against former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was not filed on the government’s instructions, says Fahmi Fadzil.

The government spokesman said the charges against the Perikatan Nasional chairman followed police reports lodged by representatives of the Pahang Palace, among others.

“During the Cabinet meeting, we were reminded that the (sedition charge) brought against Muhyiddin followed the lodging of police reports.

“The government was not involved in the matter and the investigation was done by the police, and the charges filed based on the investigation,” he told a press conference here after Wednesday's (Aug 28) weekly Cabinet meeting.

Fahmi said this was similar to Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor being charged with sedition last year following a police report by Selangor Palace representatives.

“Both sedition cases involve 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues and (reports had) nothing to do with the government,” he added.

Asked if the government would honour its pledge to review the Sedition Act 1948, Fahmi said the Cabinet has yet to discuss it.

On Tuesday (Aug 27), Muhyiddin pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court in Gua Musang, Kelantan to a charge of making seditious remarks during the campaign for the Nenggiri state by-election recently.

According to the charge, the Pagoh MP was said to have uttered the remarks in an open area near Dewan Semai Bakti Felda Perasu here between 10.30pm and 11.50pm on Aug 14.

The allegedly seditious remark was over his claim of not being invited by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to take the oath as prime minister after GE15 despite having the support of 115 MPs.
