Airlines to face increased penalties for code violations, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: Airlines that fail to adhere to the amended Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code (MACPC) will face a maximum penalty of RM200,000, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
For subsequent violations, Loke said the penalty would increase ten-fold compared to the first offence.
"The complaint period has also been extended to two years," he said.
"Amendments to the MACPC will also ensure enhanced passenger security for flights," he told a press conference here on Wednesday (Aug 28).
"The Malaysian Aviation Commission will monitor the performance of airline operators to ensure they abide by industry standards."
Since the code of conduct was introduced in 2016, cumulative penalties amounting to RM4.7mil have been issued, Loke said.
Among the amendments, airlines must offer mandatory full refunds to consumers for flights delayed by five hours or more if they opt not to continue with their initial flights.
The amendments will come into effect on Sept 2 this year.
